Hal sembra infatti aver rinnegato il proprio ruolo per rintanarsi nelle bettole londinesi con amici dissoluti, primo fra tutti il suo straordinario mentore, sir John Falstaff. Ma quando Hotspur abbandona il sovrano e si mette a capo dei ribelli di Northumberland e Worcester, alleati del gallese Owen Glendower e del conte scozzese di Douglas, il re e il suo erede saranno costretti a difendere insieme il regno e affrontare i loro demoni. Opera teatrale unica, che rifugge dagli schemi rigidi delle cronache storiche e dei generi, Enrico IV. Parte prima mescola in modo spregiudicato epos tragico e commedia, facendo convivere figure intensamente drammatiche come quella di Hotspur con altre irresistibilmente comiche come Falstaff, vera sostanza carnale della vicenda: al suo potere, fatto di furberie verbali e battute cialtronesche, perfino il principe dovrà inchinarsi.

Il principe Hal se la spassa in compagnia del burlone Falstaff, ma poi si riappacifica con il padre e nella battaglia decisiva ne salva la vita e ha parole nobili e affettuose sia per l’antagonista ucciso, Hotspur, sia per il vecchio compagno di taverna, anch’egli apparentemente ucciso, ma subito resuscitato.
