Quien desease adquirir una idea acabada de la influencia cientifica, literaria y social de la Orden de San Agus tin en Espana y Portugal y en las antiguas colonias de ambas naciones, se equi vocaria si, prescindiendo de otras fuentes para estudiarla, se concretase uni camente a los datos aportados a este trabajo, que, por muy voluminoso que sea, nunca podra considerarse como unico y exclusivo para el objeto, por la razon sencilla de que es el primer ensayo de una Biblioteca A gustz'm'ana bem-ame ricana que se publica en nuestra patria, y, naturalmente, como primer paso dado en un terreno tan vasto y anchuroso cuyos limites no se alcanzan a vis lumbrar, necesariamente tiene que adolecer de deficiencias y omisiones que no esta en nuestra mano el evitar. Bien quisieramos, ciertamente, que esta obra fuese la mas completa en su genero y digna, por lo tanto, de la Corporacion que en tantos siglos de existencia amamanto en su seno a millares de sabios ilus tres, que con sus talentos se conquistaron un lugar distinguido en la historia de las ciencias y de las letras; pero a mas de desear un imposible, hemos de confe sar, por el contrario, que aun en aquello, bien poco, que de nosotros podria es perarse, nuestros esfuerzos por abarcar mayores horizontes se han Visto coar tados, en primer lugar, por. Nuestra impericia en el arte de escribir, y, en segundo, por falta de tiempo para llevar a cabo con brillantez un trabajo que exige investigaciones laboriosas y prolongadas en archivos y bibliotecas, donde, sin duda ninguna, hubieramos adquirido un caudal abundante de noticias que no's hubieran puesto en condiciones de poder llenar las exigencias que la critica y la historia de consuno demandan en este genero de obras. Reducida nuestra labor a un circulo no muy extenso de cronicas religiosas, libros biblio graficos y contadas librerias, el material por nosotros coleccionado y ordenado solo representa, en nuestro sentir, una parte de lo que debiera ser en otras manos mas habiles que las nuestras y puestas al servicio de las dotes de ilustra cion y talento, necesarias para dar a conocer en todo su valor la importancia de-cada una de las producciones con que los hijos de San Agustin han contri buido al progreso de la civilizacion y la cultura.
