Todos los autores de esta obra han escrito sus textos tras una invitación a reflexionar sobre cosmología en los Andes. Es interesante, especialmente tras el denominado giro ontológico, cuestionarse en qué lugar se encontraba la forma de hacer etnografía en la región. Todos podemos estar de acuerdo en que, independientemente de que los autores aquí presentes se sientan más cercanos o no a ese giro, este ha marcado en gran medida la forma de afrontar el quehacer etnográfico. En realidad, se trata de un volumen que quiere mostrar qué interesa hoy en día a los antropólogos respecto a las cosmologías y cómo se trabaja desde, precisamente, la etnografía. Pero, además, aspira, sin duda alguna, a plantear algunas cuestiones de profundidad, tanto epistemológicas como metodológicas, intentando contribuir de esta forma al debate antropológico y al conocimiento de los pueblos indígenas de América. Por tanto, este no es un libro sobre antropología andina y sí sobre etnografías de los Andes. Más concretamente, etnografías de las relaciones que se establecen en los Andes entre diferentes seres. No hay título posible que dé cuenta de un panorama tan diverso como el que se ofrece en las páginas que siguen. Hablar de «reflejo» es un tópico ya muy gastado. Los indios de las tierras bajas, supuestamente desnudos (pinturas o adornos no parecían contar como tales para quien entendía la ropa como una manera de velar «vergüenzas»), son probablemente la parcela de la humanidad sobre la que se han proyectado más ideas. Todas les probaban bien: espejo de la naturaleza, anarquistas o comunistas primitivos, caníbales feroces. Ellos mismos no han dado muestras de una menor inclinación a esa proyección: cientos de relatos amerindios comienzan con ese cazador que, mirando a través de la superficie de un lago, descubre otro universo que equivale al suyo, y eso se extiende a otros reflejos: en la ciudad de los blancos se adivina la ciudad de los espíritus; en las pirañas o las anacondas colosales de sus películas de terror exótico se reconocen las bestias primigenias y auténticas, mucho más poderosas que sus réplicas corrientes.
