Las décadas centrales del siglo XIX suelen considerarse como el momento romántico en el área rioplatense y, por tanto, el del predominio de una concepción historicista entre las elites letradas. Sin desconocer esta caracterización, el presente trabajo propone una nueva lectura de esa cultura al examinarla a la luz de los estudios recientes que promueven una reinterpretación de la vida pública posrevolucionaria. Dicho análisis se ciñe a dos series de fenómenos que permiten dar cuenta de los particulares vínculos establecidos entre cultura y política. Por un lado, los medios a través de los cuales se procuraba dar forma al conocimiento histórico, vale decir, instituciones, discursos y prácticas ligadas a ese saber como la edición de colecciones documentales. Por el otro, las representaciones del pasado, considerando para ello un amplio y heterogéneo corpus textual y no sólo las obras canónicas de unos pocos autores de renombre.

This book traces the impact of exile in the formation of independent republics in Chile and the Río de la Plata in the decades after independence. Exile was central to state and nation formation, playing a role in the emergence of territorial borders and Romantic notions of national difference, while creating a transnational political culture that spanned the new independent nations. Analyzing the mobility of a large cohort of largely elite political émigrés from Chile and the Río de la Plata across much of South America before 1862, Edward Blumenthal reinterprets the political thought of well-known figures in a transnational context of exile. As Blumenthal shows, exile was part of a reflexive process in which elites imagined the nation from abroad while gaining experience building the same state and civil society institutions they considered integral to their republican nation-building projects.

During the 18th century, visitors would come and attend the British Parliament sessions in order to understand how a representative assembly could technically function, because politics is not only about ideas, but also a lot about practices and techniques. A great deal has been written on the circulation of political ideas during the 19th century, and on the part played by exiles, refugees and military volunteers in this intellectual mobility. However, less is known of what constitutes, in the end, politics: not only ideas, but practices, the material implementation of politics. How does one debate, vote, or demonstrate? What is political representation? How does one “start” a political party, and run it? All the political engineering, of the 19th century, the period of the birth of modern politics, has been the result of an intense circulation of exiles, which, along with bringing in new ideas, borrowed new ways of “making politics”. ¿Por qué un Almanaque Histórico Argentino? Porque creemos que la historia, como ciencia, reconstruye y analiza el pasado, interpretando las fuentes desde el presente. "Revolución" es un concepto fundamental en la experiencia política moderna y contemporánea. Si bien hoy en día parece haber perdido la potencia política que tuvo durante los últimos dos siglos, lo cierto es que sin este concepto tendríamos dificultades para poder expresar y entender experiencias, expectativas, estados de cosas y procesos sociales significativos tanto del pasado como del presente. Sin embargo, esto no siempre fue así. Como todo concepto, revolución también tiene una historia cuya comprensión requiere atender a la vez a sus aspectos lingüísticos y sociopolíticos. El libro, que se elaboró con esta premisa como punto de partida, reúne un conjunto de trabajos de historia política, intelectual y conceptual cuyos autores reconstruyen y analizan algunos tramos significativos de la historia del concepto revolución en Iberoamérica y el Atlántico norte entre los siglos XVII y XX. En ese sentido, y a diferencia de los estudios que parten de una definición sobre qué es una revolución -ya sea normativa, ideológica o analítica-, su propósito es examinar los usos y significados de revolución y su constitución en un concepto político fundamental en el marco de los procesos históricos considerando para ello tanto su función referencial como su capacidad performativa, es decir, como indicador de estados de cosas, pero también como modelador de las mismas, como prefiguración de otras inexistentes y como guía que orienta las acciones individuales y colectivas.
