Purpose - The purpose of the study is to examine whether there is a difference in the entrepreneurial intentions among male and female students in UAE. The study is extremely relevant and interesting since females in the UAE have a higher success rate in education but this has not been translated into comparable increases in employment rates. Given the social, cultural, and religious fabric of the country's indigenous society and the rising number of female graduates, this anomaly in the corporate sector might result in more female entrepreneurs in this part of the globe, as compared to the rest of the world. Design/methodology/approach - The research studies a sample of first year business students from the United Arab Emirates, namely Dubai Men's College and Dubai Women's College. The primary survey was a part of an international study involving 12 universities in Europe, Middle East and Australia. A five-point Likert scale was used for each question and dummy variables were computed based on the scores. The authors used a multivariable econometric model to assess the statistical significance of the determinants of entrepreneurial attitudes. The empirical assessment of the students' entrepreneurial propensity was based on the estimation of a logistic regression. Findings - The authors' results show that male and female students were equally strong in terms of their propensity to become future entrepreneurs. Female respondents showed higher risk-taking behavior than males, which was contradictory to past research findings that have typically found females to be more conservative in risk-taking than males. The estimation results showed that the propensity of future entrepreneurship does not depend on gender - it depended on factors like creativity, motivation and awareness. This is a very important result since the authors' sample does not follow the expected trend in the existing literature on gender differences and entrepreneurship propensities where a wide gender gap has been found. Originality/value - Both academia and practitioners have increased their efforts in promoting an entrepreneurial mindset within society. However, only a few studies have investigated entrepreneurial attitudes amongst students and no research studies have been conducted in the UAE. The authors' research fills this lacuna and shows that the efforts need to be directed towards nurturing the creativity and awareness of both male and female students for future business ventures.

Research on women entrepreneurs over the last 40 years has centered on comparative studies between men and women related to sociodemographic, perceptual, and contextual factors. An emerging area for research is studying contextual factors such as corporations, households, family businesses, and universities. Using an institutional theory framing, this study explored the constraining and enabling factors institutions have on the entrepreneurial propensity of women faculty at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. Given the gaps in the women's entrepreneurship knowledge base, the following research question was asked: how do university policy, support measures, and reward systems constrain or enable the entrepreneurial activity of white women faculty in engineering? A qualitative case study approach was used to collect and analyze the data. Interviews were the primary data source and documents were the secondary data source. Pattern matching was used to analyze the data. Findings show that university promotion methods and the number of faculty job responsibilities were constraining factors. The factor that was enabling to white women engineering faculty at both universities, was the ability to act as a change agent who shapes new institutional environments.

Traditionally, the study of entrepreneurial behavior focuses on such factors as (i) the personality characteristics that distinguish the entrepreneur from non-entrepreneur and (ii) demographic characteristics such gender, age, familiar antecedents and education. With particular respect to investigating the development, acquisition, and dissemination of entrepreneurial skills and behaviors, the authors focus on the university environment, as a locus of research and innovation, where students are exposed to a wide variety of influences that are enhanced by a high degree of connectivity. The underlying theme of this volume is to develop our understanding of the sociology of student entrepreneurial behavior and in doing so attempt to synthesize literature investigating individual talent with the literature on concurrent knowledge sourcing in the pursuit of entrepreneurial activities. Specifically, the authors investigate the degree to which access to diverse knowledge (in addition to such psychological characteristics and tolerance of ambiguity and risk taking) influences the nature and probability of entrepreneurial success. Moreover, they explore the role of social media and social networking in facilitating access to distributed and disparate information and knowledge. Their research addresses such timely questions as: Where do entrepreneurial opportunities come from? How can higher education best stimulate the creation of firms emanating from young and smart minds in colleges and universities? What is the value of MOOCs for frequent, early, and “thick” communication among the various specialties needed to accomplish entrepreneurial projects? How do we know whether social media affect students’ responses to new knowledge and new ideas? To what extent do educational practices affect racial and ethnic differences in student entrepreneurship? What is the role of the indigenous minority student entrepreneur in establishing high-technology firms? The result is a multi-dimensional approach that sheds light on the dynamics of education, knowledge creation, social networking, innovation and new business development.

The existing literature identifies a number of antecedent factors that positively influence the propensity of individuals to become entrepreneurs. Key among these are self-efficacy, prior knowledge of other entrepreneurs and perception of opportunities. At the same time, policy makers commonly identify fear of failure as a major deterrent factor for entrepreneurs taking the entrepreneurial plunge. This paper examines the relative impacts of these antecedents and deterrent factor on entrepreneurial propensity, defined as the likelihood of starting one's own business in the three East Asian newly-industrialised economies (NIEs) of Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. We also test for possible differences in the variables effects on opportunity vs. necessity entrepreneurial propensities. Our findings highlight significant location differences among the variables in the case of overall, opportunity and necessity entrepreneurship. Finally, we discuss the relevant policy implications from our findings.

The existing literature identifies a number of antecedent factors that positively influence the propensity of individuals to become entrepreneurs. Key among these is self-efficacy, knowledge of other entrepreneurs and the perception of opportunities. At the same time, current research shows that fear of failure is a major deterrent factor for entrepreneurs taking the entrepreneurial plunge. Using Shane's (2003) individual-opportunity nexus framework as an overarching theory, our study examines how these antecedents and deterrent factors influence the individual's propensity to start a new business in the three East Asian economies of Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. We also test for possible differences in the variables effects on an individual's propensity to start a new business out of necessity versus the perception of opportunity. Importantly, our findings highlight significant location differences among the variables for opportunity-driven start-ups, while no significant differences were found for necessity-driven start-ups. Finally, we discuss the relevant policy implications from our findings.
