Das sakrale Bauen erlaubt dem Entwerfenden eine seltene Konzentration auf die Schaffung von Raum, Körper und Form. Weitaus weniger als andere Bauaufgaben wird sakrale Architektur von funktionalen Anforderungen, Normen und Standards bestimmt; sie kann sich in der Regel als pure Baukunst entfalten. Im Hinblick auf den Entwurf bietet die Bauaufgabe dem Architekten somit immense Freiheiten. Zugleich verlangt aber der besondere atmosphärische Anspruch sakraler Räume von den Architekten einen hochsensiblen Umgang mit Religion sowie mit den jeweiligen kulturellen und baulichen Traditionen. Das Buch stellt in einem systematischen Teil die entwurflichen, technischen und planerischen Grundlagen des Bauens von Kirchen, Synagogen und Moscheen dar. In einem Projektteil werden ca. 70 realisierte Bauten der letzten drei Jahrzehnte dargestellt. Dem Autor gelingt auf der Basis seiner fundierten Kenntnisse und langjährigen Publikationserfahrungen, eine wertvolle Analyse der konzeptionellen und formalen Aspekte (z. B. Grundriss- oder Raumform, Lichteinfall, Materialität), die entscheidend zur sakralen Wirkung von Räumen beitragen.

How was the re-emerging Jewish religious practice after 1945 shaped by traditions before the Shoah? To what extent was it influenced by new inspirations through migration and new cultural contacts? By analysing objects like prayer books, musical instruments, Torah scrolls, audio documents and prayer rooms, this volume shows how the post-war communities created new Jewish musical, architectural and artistic forms while abiding by the tradition. This peer-reviewed volume presents contributions to the conference „Jewish communities in Germany in Transition", held in July 2021, as well as the results of a related research project carried out by two university institutions and two museums: the Bet Tfila – Research Unit for Jewish Architecture (Technische Universität Braunschweig), the European Center for Jewish Music (Hanover University for Music, Drama and Media), the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum, and the Jewish Museum Augsburg Swabia. For the first time, post war synagogues in Germany and their objects were researched on a broad and interdisciplinary basis – regarding history of architecture, art history of their furniture and ritual objects as well as liturgy and musicology. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) during the years 2018 to 2021 in its funding line „The Language of Objects".

In Spiritus Loci Bert Daelemans, who graduated as an architect and a theologian, provides an interdisciplinary method for the theological assessment of church architecture. Rather than a theory, this method is based on case studies of contemporary buildings (1995-2015), which are often criticized for lacking theological depth. In a threefold method, the author brings to light the ways in which architecture can be theology – or theotopy – by focusing on topoi (places) rather than logoi (words). Churches reveal our relationship with God by engaging our body, mind, and community. This method proves relevant not only for the way we perceive these buildings, but also for the way we use them, especially in our prophetic engagement for a better world.

Dies droht insbesondere, wenn der Umgang des Eigentumers mit seinem Werkstuck das Immaterialguterrecht des Schopfers beruhrt. Besonders vielschichtig ist dieser Interessenkonflikt bei Werken der religiosen Kunst. Hier konnen auf Seiten der Beteiligten religiose Motive eine Rolle spielen; bei der Konfliktentscheidung konnen dann insbesondere Wertungen der Religionsfreiheit und des kirchlichen Selbstbestimmungsrechts zu berucksichtigen sein.Jens Felix Muller untersucht, wie derartige Konflikte zu entscheiden sind. Dabei zeigt er anhand von Fallbeispielen, wie sich der religiose Bezug des Kunstwerks auf die Konfliktentscheidung auswirkt.
