Many Scientists and researchers have proven that the human relationship with nature is broken. It remains important that we understand how this broken relationship has directly and drastically impacted the air we breathe, the soil we depend on for food production, and the water we consume for our collective survival. It is incumbent upon leaders of all religions, classes, countries, and nations to work towards solving these pressing environmental issues. For the purpose of this manuscript, I will be delving into the Islamic scriptures in order to offer an answer to the major questions affecting mankind. According to the Islamic requirements of faith, maintaining our natural environment is perhaps one of the highest demands prescribed to human beings. Therefore, addressing environmental issues from an Islamic perspective may offer substantial solutions towards the recovery of earth, and the mending of our broken relationship with that which is natural but slowly becoming extinct.

The first comprehensive survey of Christian environmental ethics and activism offers a Christian understanding of environmental conservation, protection, and stewardship that speaks directly to ongoing environmental issues. There are many books on Christian environmental ethics, but none provides a clear and thorough analysis of the history of the church's understanding of and practices toward the care of creation. In addition to filling this important void, Between Heaven and Earth: Christian Perspectives on Environmental Protection is also unique in at least two ways. First, it frames Christian responses to ethical questions as they are understood by modern conservation ethicists. Second, it addresses issues of conservation management and policy as they really exist. This captivating volume begins by framing the complex interaction between ethics, environment, and faith and the relation of that interaction to questions of environmental ethics. Subsequent chapters illuminate a biblical understanding of the human relationship to nature and the church's teachings and practices regarding that relationship, illustrated through the lives of scholars and saints. The book concludes with an examination of the ways in which Christian practice and teaching can shape environmental policy today and the ways in which partnerships can be built between the church and the environmental community.

How we come to our conclusions about ethical issues matters as much as the specific policies or practices we commend. This book argues that four key doctrines form a theological perspective for environmental ethics. They are the key ideas upon which people build their ethics of the environment. By looking at the doctrines of revelation, creation, anthropology, and eschatology, we can find points of contact to work together more effectively for the common good and have more meaningful debates when our positions differ. This book uses examples from four different theological positions—ecotheology, theological liberalism, fundamentalism, and evangelicalism—to show that a creation-positive ethic is possible from all of these positions, and it explores why people who stand within various theological streams may engage in environmental issues in diverse ways.

This collection of essays discusses the human relationship with, and responsibilities toward, the natural environment from the perspective of religions and the social sciences. The chapters examine a variety of conditions that have contributed to the contemporary environmental crisis, including abuse of power, economic greed, industrialization, deforestation, and unplanned waste management. They then discuss concepts from several different religious texts and traditions that promote environmental protection as a sacred moral duty for all humanity. Religious concepts such as dharma (duty toward Mother Earth), tikkun Olam (repair of the world), khalifa (people as deputies of God on earth), amanah (the universe as a trust in human hands), and paticca samuppada (dependent co-arising) are employed to argue that all the components of the biosphere are integral to the cosmos, each piece with its own value and role in the harmony of the whole. The book makes it clear that religions can become more “green” and play a helpful role in raising our ecological consciousness and supporting preservation of the environment into the future.

This Is My Father's World critically engages contemporary environmental ethics and provides Christians with a theological foundation for appropriately relating to the world they call God's creation--a creation ethic. It is refreshingly and thoroughly scriptural. However, what the Bible says may shock people with conservative or liberal presuppositions already in mind. This book is a challenge to both sides of the debate.

This book brings together the interdisciplinary reflections of Christian scholars and poets, to explore how ecological virtues can foster the flourishing of our home planet in the face of unprecedented environmental change and devastation. Its central questions are: What virtues are needed for us to be better caretakers of our home planet? What vices must we extinguish if we are to flourish on the earth? What is the connection between such virtues and vices and the flourishing of all creatures? Each contribution offers insight on ecological virtue ethical questions through disciplinary lenses ranging from biology, geology, and economics, to literature, theology, and philosophy. The chapters feature the legacy and lessons of senior scholars reflecting on a lifetime of earthkeeping work, highlight global concerns and perspectives, and include compelling poetic reflections. Focusing on the way in which human vices and virtues drive so many of our ecological problems and solutions, the volume engages timely issues of environmental importance – such as environmental racism, interfaith dialogue, ecological philosophies of work and economics, marine pollution, ecological despair, hope and humility – encouraging fresh reflection and action. It will be of interest to those working in theology and religious studies, philosophy, ethics, and environmental studies.

This book is a critical comparative study of African (Shona) and Christian attitudes to nature. The purpose of initiating this discussion is to review the existing attitudes to nature in these two religions. This has important implications in an attempt to formulate a pubic environmental ethic in which traditional Shona and Christian adherents participate. This is crucial in the light of the ongoing inequity and ecological imbalance in Zimbabwe.
