This Special Issue covers a wide range of areas—including building orientation, service life, use of photocatalytically active structures and PV facades, implications of transportation system, building types (i.e., high rise, multilevel, commercial, residential), life cycle assessment, and structural engineering—that need to be considered in the environmental impact assessment of buildings, and the chapters include case studies across the globe. Consideration of these strategies would help reduce energy and material consumption, environmental emissions, and waste generation associated with all phases of a building’s life cycle. Chapter 1 demonstrates that green star concrete exhibits the same structural properties as conventional concrete in Australia. Chapter 2 showed that the use of TiO2 as a photocatalyst on the surface of construction materials with a suitable stable binding agent, such as aggregates, would enable building walls to absorb NOx from air. This study found that TiO2 has the potential to reduce ambient concentrations of NOx from areas where this pollutant becomes concentrated under solar irradiation. Chapter 3 presents the life cycle assessment of architecturally integrated glass–glass photovoltaics in building facades to find the appropriate material composition for a multicolored PV façade offering improved environmental performance. Chapter 4 shows that urban office buildings lacking appropriate orientation experienced indoor overheating. Chapter 5 details four modeling approaches that were implemented to estimate buildings’ response towards load shedding. Chapter 6 covers the life cycle GHG emissions of high-rise residential housing block to discover opportunities for environmental improvement. Chapter 7 discusses an LCA framework that took into account variation in the service life of buildings associated with the use of different types of materials. For a sustainable development, it is essential to improve the building stock and sector which are majorly affiliated with the negative impacts on environment. The analysis of current situation and establish the basic problems in order to decrease the environmental impacts of buildings. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a holistic and scientific method in the area of environmental impact assessment. While the LCA may be applied to individual building components or specified life cycle phases, it is also possible to assess the environmental impacts of a building from cradle to grave with an integrated approach toward whole life cycle. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the current position of the LCA method, which is a vital component of the sustainability assessment in building sector, and to make a quantitative assessment on the environmental impacts of multi-storey-mass housing which has the primary share of recent residential building stock in Turkey. One residential unit of a mass housing development in Izmir constructed at the last decade, at the edge of the expanding city boundary, was selected as the case object of this study. The life cycle of building is fundamentally examined in three phases, which are: pre-use phase, use phase and end-of-life phase. The Simapro software 7.3.3 and Ecoinvent 2.2, up-to-date database, were selected for the LCA simulation. In addition, as a local input to database, energy data for Turkey was created. As a result of this study, the environmental impacts during the life cycle of a multi-storey building residential unit have been ascertained and the life phases, building components and operational processes which have the heaviest impact on the environment have been determined.

We are not free from environmental risks that accompany the development of human societies. Modern economic development has accelerated environmental pollution, caused loss of natural habitats, and modified landscapes. These environmental changes have impacted natural systems: water and heat circulation, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity. These changes in natural systems degrade ecosystem services and subsequently increase environmental risks for humans. Environmental risks, therefore, are not only human health risks by pollution, climatic anomalies and natural disasters, but also degradation of ecosystem services on which most people are relying for their lives. We cannot entirely eliminate the risks, because it is not possible to attain zero impact on the environment, but we need to find a mechanism that minimizes environmental risks for human sustainably. A big percentage of the environmental impacts caused by industry come from the construction sector. In Spain almost 30% of the total CO2 emissions come from the use of residential and non-residential buildings. Apart from the energy and water consumption of the operational stage of the building, the resource extraction and material manufacture stages must also be considered, as they represent between 25-30% of the total energy consumption of the building's life cycle1. Therefore a building as a single body represents a great impact in the environment, the amount of resources consumed and waste produced are excessive and, without any doubt, unsustainable. Under these considerations, this investigation intends to define the rehabilitation of buildings as an answer to address environmental impact. By optimizing management, organization and improving the physical performance of the stock of existing buildings, the rehabilitation with environmental goals embraces the possibilities of transforming the construction sector, by giving way to the concept of re-use and recycle and encouraging these answers in order to recover resources from existing structures instead of extracting them, and improving the buildings operation and management to increase its life cycle performance. But rehabilitating a building is not a simple process. Many factors must be taken into account especially when the building is operating. Certifying tools for sustainable buildings give the guidance, through a list of criteria, to accomplish a level of sustainable efficiency in the building, for either new construction or existing buildings. The certifying tools for existing buildings have been developed to assess their current performance in operation and maintenance, and the potential they have to improve. The certifying tool for new constructions guides the building from the design stage to the construction stage to accomplish a physical and inherit sustainable performance. By analyzing and comparing both types of assessment tools and from different organizations (LEED and BREEAM), it is intended with this work to develop a tool that will not only certify a rehabilitated building, but will also shows the steps, the criteria and procedures for a Sustainable Rehabilitation.
