This book reconstructs the fate of Italian prisoners of war captured by the Red Army between August 1941 and the winter of 1942-43. On 230.000 Italians left on the Eastern front almost 100.000 did not come back home. Testimonies and memoirs from surviving veterans complement the author's intensive work in Russian and Italian archives. The study examines Italian war crimes against the Soviet civilian population and describes the particularly grim fate of the thousands of Italian military internees who after the 8 September 1943 Armistice had been sent to Germany and were subsequently captured by the Soviet army to be deported to the USSR. The book presents everyday life and death in the Soviet prisoner camps and explains the particularly high mortality among Italian prisoners. Giusti explores how well the system of prisoner labor, personally supervised by Stalin, was planned, starting in 1943. A special focus of the study is antifascist propaganda among prisoners and the infiltration of the Soviet security agencies in the camps. Stalin was keen to create a new cohort of supporters through the mass political reeducation of war prisoners, especially middle-class intellectuals and military élite. The book ends with the laborious diplomatic talks in 1946 and 1947 between USSR, Italy, and the Holy See for the repatriation of the surviving prisoners.

Vent’anni dopo la prima edizione, Tutti i vivi all’assalto ritorna con l’aggiunta di tre capitoli per raccontare che cosa furono per gli alpini sopravvissuti la prigionia in Urss, le epidemie nei campi, il ritorno in un’Italia spesso matrigna. Dal 17 al 31 gennaio 1943 la Tridentina, la Cuneense e la Julia affrontano centinaia e centinaia di chilometri nella neve per sottrarsi all’Armata Rossa, che ha appena sopraffatto le truppe tedesche a Stalingrado. A guidare la marcia sulla neve degli alpini, ai quali si è accodata la Vicenza, è soprattutto il desiderio di ritornare «a baita» piú che l’amor di patria. Li guida la fedeltà ai monti e alle valli da cui provengono. Si cammina, si combatte e si muore a -40°, a -45°, in certe notti a -48°. A volte si arranca per dodici ore nella sterminata steppa di ghiaccio e poi bisogna andare all’arma bianca per conqui¬stare una povera isba in cui ripararsi per qualche ora. Si lavora, dunque, di baionetta e bombe a mano perché mancano l’artiglieria e i carri armati, cosí come mancano il cibo e gli aerei. Sono combattimenti disperati nei quali «Tutti i vivi all’assalto» diventa il grido di riconoscimento e l’estremo atto di fede nei confronti del commilitone, del compaesano, del conoscente: e allora si pregano Dio e i santi che l’urina sia sufficiente a riscaldare la mitragliatrice, si chiede all’amico del cuore di essere uccisi piuttosto che cadere nelle mani del nemico. È la semisconosciuta anabasi italiana, la piú straordinaria avanzata all’indietro della storia militare, secondo gli storici americani e britannici. Buttate nella peggiore fornace della Seconda guerra mondiale dall’aberrante decisione di Mussolini d’inviare un corpo di spedizione in Unione Sovietica, le penne nere scrivono una pagina di epico e silenzioso valore. Alla fine saranno piú di centomila coloro che non faranno ritorno, oltre tremila coloro che ne porteranno un ricordo indelebile nelle carni, e anche chi la scamperà ne avrà comunque l’esistenza segnata.
