An ocean bottom seismograph was deployed on the seaward side of the Kuril Trench off Hokkaido, Japan, in 5460 m of water, in August 1975 during the joint Soviet-American Tsunami Expedition. During the seven-day record, S-P times were distributed in three groups: 19-24 sec, corresponding to aftershocks of the 10 June and 13 June 1975 earthquakes southeast of Nemuro, Japan and to earthquakes east of Sanriku, Japan; approximately 30 sec, from south of Erimo Peninsula, Hokkaido; and approximately 100 sec, from the Izu-Bonin Islands. Seven earthquakes, with hypocenters well determined by the land seismic net, are studied in detail. A shallow focus earthquake yields typical oceanic mantle velocities shallower than 50 km in the slab which dips under the Japanese archipelago. However, deeper focus earthquakes reveal anomalously high velocities averaged over the upper 230 km, in agreement with the models of Utsu and Oliver and Isacks. Two deep earthquakes, whose paths lie in the Pacific Ocean asthenosphere, suggest a velocity 3% lower than that predicted by Jeffreys-Bullen, in agreement with the above models. Spectral analysis of S arrivals suggests Q sub s values of 1000-1500 for nearby earthquakes and 4000-6000 for longer-distance earthquakes, implying an unusual attenuation mechanism for long travel paths, which enhances the high frequencies.

This report is concerned with the problem of estimating credible values of the peak velocity and acceleration of the ground motion for central United States earthquakes. The report contains a catalog of all known earthquakes large enough to be felt or of body-wave magnitude greater than or equal to 3. The data of the catalog are plotted on a map, which together with structural geological information is used to identify eight seismic source zones in the central United States. The boundaries of the source zones are inexact, so that special study will be required for establishing credible ground-motion values for sites near the boundaries. A maximum-magnitude earthquake is determined for each zone, as well as a magnitude-recurrence equation. Using the Murphy-O'Brien formulation, as well as theoretical results of Herrmann and a limited amount of strong-motion data for the central United States, equations are derived for that region which relate maximum horizontal acceleration and velocity to body-wave magnitude and epicentral distance. This study is based on earthquakes reported on the Preliminary Determination of Epicenter (P.D.E.) cards of the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Four types of presentations are made: (1) a chronological list of earthquakes: (2) a magnitude map showing the geographical distribution of earthquakes whose magnitudes are greater than, or equal to, 3.0; (3) a presentation of frequency versus magnitude for the total United States for and individual regions of high seismicity; and (4) a 'seismicity' map giving a quantitative measure of relative seismic activity.

The results of various previously reported investigations of the Danny Boy event are utilized to compute and compare the volumes of ejected material and volumes attributable to other crater-formation mechanisms. Imbalance of the volumetric contributions is attributed primarily to the uncertainty of the ejecta density in the lip region. Approximately 65 percent of the rock material dissociated by the explosion was permanently ejected from the crater; less than 2 percent of the ejected material was deposited beyond 3 crater radii from ground zero. Comparisons are made with high-explosive and nuclear detonations in desert alluvium. (Author).

This study attempts to determine site effects on earthquake ground motion and the correlation between acceleration and/or velocity generated during the San Fernando Earthquake and topography of the San Gabriel Mountain range. It was found that the contours of peak acceleration and peak velocity generally follow the topography of the San Gabriel Mountain range. The topographical effects on the ground motion could be interpreted in a simple manner as a function of elevation and direction of wave transmission path. The elevation and direction become the dominant factors in the distribution of the ground motion in the near field. A simple, practical method for calculating the bedrock motion using the ground motion-elevation gradient has been applied in the area south of Kagel Mountain and north of Santa Monica Mountain, in the San Fernando Valley. This method is validated using after-shock data. This ground motion-elevation gradient method was applied to an area where the topography has its highest elevation at the epicentral region and decreases in elevation to the surrounding locations in the near field (within 30 km). In any case, when the epicenter occurs at an elevation lower than the elevation of the surrounding area, this gradient method may not be applicable and must be tested for this alternate condition.
