Apresentamos mais de 30 anos de experiência em estatística aplicada em epidemiologia combinada com mais de 10 anos de expertise em ambiente de programação em R. O livro é destinado aos estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação em ciências da saúde que necessitam ou gostam de analisar dados e fazer gráficos. A elaboração desse livro ocorreu em propósito de apresentar um curso de verão e uma nova disciplina de pós-graduação na Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo em 2010. Após 4 anos de aplicação com mais de 100 estudantes ou pesquisadores formados, a disciplina migrou para o Centro Universitário Saúde ABC a partir de 2016. Desde então tornou-se disciplina eletiva do programa de mestrado e doutorado em ciências da saúde. São apresentados aqui os conceitos de programação orientada a objetos e de construção de novas funções. A curva de aprendizagem da linguagem de programação é uma exponencial: (1) no primeiro momento o aprendizado é difícil e nada acontece, (2) no segundo momento o estudante começa a entender como construir objetos e novas funções e (3) em terceiro momento o estudante levanta voo e percebe que não há limites dentro desse ambiente de programação em R. O contexto da aplicação da linguagem de programação é próximo do lúdico. Construímos cenários didáticos de interesse para qualquer ser humano que deseja salvar vidas. Por exemplo, cenário de avião com caso índice de SARS; como calcular o risco de transmissão para os passageiros suscetíveis após 3 horas de voo no ambiente em programação em R com uma nova função criada inteiramente por você? É por meio de uma estratégia didática de 'faça você mesmo' que contribuímos com a sua formação no raciocínio analítico e na execução de comandos em linguagem de programação em R. O livro é com certeza recomendado para todos aqueles que se acham muito grandes para brincar de video game. Venham brincar com o ambiente R! This book is dedicated to the proposition that health policy should be evidence-based, and that epidemiology can provide much of the evidence. Unlike most textbooks of epidemiology, which focus on etiologic research, it emphasizes the descriptive methods that are more relevant to policy. Part I introduces the subject of policy and its formulation, reviews selected methods that are generally relevant to health policy, and provides an overview of health data and their manipulation. Part II proceeds through the policy cycle: assessing population health status, assessing potential interventions, making policy choices; implementing and finally evaluating policy. At each step it identifies the potential contributions of epidemiology and describes and demonstrates relevant methods. Many practical examples are provided, drawn from several developed countries, but mathematics is kept to an elementary level. A recurring theme is the interaction between health phenomena and the underlying population dynamics, and thus the close relationship of this type of epidemiology to demography.
