This volume discusses potential contributions of quantitative approaches to measuring health problems and diseases in general populations, in order to improve political choices and to allocate scarce resources and evaluate their use. Using a population-oriented approach, rather than the customary institutionally-or professionally-based approaches to planning and developing health services, the contributors focus attention on the health needs of total com- munities and general populations. The uses of epidemiology are thus extended beyond their application to studies of the etiology of disease.

My conviction is that the matters addressed in this volume are of transcendental importance if we are to face up to the challenges of the 1990s and beyond. How, for instance, are we to cope with a truly ecological approach to public health and all its concomitant changes of risk groups worldwide unless there is a full appre ciation of the popUlation perspective throughout the health establishment? The global village has achieved a measure of interdependence requiring recognition by all concerned with the health of both individuals and communities that there is an urgent need to share our knowledge and deploy our resources in the best interests of people everywhere. The history of public health initiatives, the origins of epidemiology, and the tragic separation-virtually a divorce--of public health from medicine recounted in the chapters that follow argue strongly for an early rapprochement. Health professionals who complement each other's knowledge and skills can be reunited through their common reliance on epidemiology as a major fundamental science for the entire health enterprise. Henceforth, epidemiology should be ranked in importance with cellular and molecular biology, immunology, and the social and systems sciences; all are essential if we are to cope with the vast array of diseases and disorders that face us in both the developed and developing worlds. We need more first-rate laboratory scientists, clinicians, nurses, aides, village health work ers, and managers committed to serving the public.

Translating the evidence from the bedside to populations This sixth edition of the best-selling Epidemiology, Evidence-based Medicine and Public Health Lecture Notes equips students and health professionals with the basic tools required to learn, practice and teach epidemiology and health prevention in a contemporary setting. The first section, ‘Epidemiology’, introduces the fundamental principles and scientific basis behind work to improve the health of populations, including a new chapter on genetic epidemiology. Applying the current and best scientific evidence to treatment at both individual and population level is intrinsically linked to epidemiology and public health, and has been introduced in a brand new second section: ‘Evidence-based Medicine’ (EBM), with advice on how to incorporate EBM principles into your own practice. The third section, 'Public Health', introduces students to public health practice, including strategies and tools used to prevent disease, prolong life, reduce inequalities, and includes global health. Thoroughly updated throughout, including new studies and cases from around the globe, key learning features include: Learning objectives and key points in every chapter Extended coverage of critical appraisal and data interpretation A brand new self-assessment section of SAQs and ’True/False’ questions for each topic A glossary to quickly identify the meaning of key terms, all of which are highlighted for study and exam preparation Further reading suggestions on each topic Whether approaching these topics for the first time, starting a special study module or placement, or looking for a quick-reference summary, this book offers medical students, junior doctors, and public health students an invaluable collection of theoretical and practical information.
