This text draws together a number of major epidemiological studies of the cerebral palsies from many different countries. The first chapter is a historical review by Dr. Tom Ingram, who translated much of Freud's original writings on cerebral palsy, and is an acknowledged expert in this field. The editors have then drawn together critical evidence from several countries on prenatal, perinatal and postnatal risk factors contributing to cerebral palsy and have also considered the role played by social factors. A chapter by Jonathan Wigglesworth examines how these adverse factors may modify brain development and result in handicap to the child. The methodological problems of classifying and counting the cerebral palsies and assessing their frequency are fully discussed, and the difficult question of how far the perinatal health services have an impact on outcome is considered. Altogether, this is a comprehensive book on this topic, and a valuable reference source for anyone working in the field of cerebral palsy or epidemiology.

This volume contains the lectures and seminars given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Sensor Systems for Biological Threads: The Algal Toxins Case”, held in Pisa, Italy in October, 2007. The Institute was sponsored and funded by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. It is my pleasant duty to thank this institution. This ASI offered updated information on how far the research on algal toxins has gone in the exploration of structures, biosynthesis and regulation of toxins, and the development of technology for bio-monitoring these c- pounds. Algae can form heavy growths in ponds, lakes, reservoirs and sl- moving rivers throughout the world; algae can house toxins which are - ually released into water when the cells rupture or die. Hundreds of toxins have been identified so far. Detection methods, including rapid screening, have been developed to help us learning more about them, especially to find out which toxins are a real threat for people and what conditions encourage their production and accumulation. Early detection of algal toxins is an - portant aspect for public safety and natural environment, and significant efforts are underway to develop effective and reliable tools that can be used for this purpose.

People go traveling for two reasons: because they are searching for something, or they are running from something. Katie’s world is shattered by the news that her headstrong and bohemian younger sister, Mia, has been found dead at the bottom of a cliff in Bali. The authorities say that Mia jumped—that her death was a suicide. Although they’d hardly spoken to each other since Mia suddenly left on an around-the-world trip six months earlier, Katie refuses to accept that her sister would have taken her own life. Distraught that they never made peace, Katie leaves her orderly, sheltered life in London behind and embarks on a journey to find out the truth. With only the entries in Mia’s travel journal as her guide, Katie retraces the last few months of her sister’s life and—page by page, country by country—begins to uncover the mystery surrounding her death. . . . Weaving together the exotic settings and suspenseful twists of Alex Garland’sThe Beachwith a powerful tale of familial love in the spirit of Rosamund Lupton’sSister, Swimming at Nightis a fast-paced, accomplished, and gripping debut novel of secrets, loss, and forgiveness.
