Algae are a diverse assemblage of photosynthetic organisms that includes prokaryotes (Cyanobacteria) as well as unicellular and multicellular eukaryotes. They inhabit freshwater, saltwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. Terrestrial algae include microscopic photobionts that thrive (both in abundance and diversity) in humid conditions. Unfortunately, terrestrial algae are an understudied group in the field of biology. This dissertation presents algal systematic research from the neotropical rainforests of Panama (Central America) and Suriname (South America) as well as coastal areas of Oahu, Hawaii (USA). Finally, an overall phylogeny of all green algae is inferred through multigene molecular phylogenetic inference. Biodiversity assessments were based on environmental cloning and sequencing. Systematic biology techniques included morphological observations via light and electron microscopy from specimens isolated through unialgal culture. Systematic assessments were further confirmed through molecular phylogenetic trees reconstructed by Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood, and parsimony methods. Environmental sequencing results suggest that the Surinamese rainforest Raleighvallen is comprised of various green algal (Chlorophyta), nostocalean (Cyanobacteria), and diatom (Heterokontophyta) taxa. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the green algal order Trentepohliales collected from Panama strongly suggest that the genera Printzina and Trentepohlia do not form separate monophyletic lineages. These results indicate that the morphological characteristics currently used to distinguish these two genera need to be reassessed. The green alga Spongiochyris hawaiiensis is a common epiphyte found on the bark of Casuarina trees in Waimanalo state park on the island of Oahu. Molecular phylogenetic analyses as well as electron microscopy observations of this alga strongly suggest that it belongs to the order Cladophorales. Finally, a multigene phylogeny of green algae from all habitats (marine, freshwater, and terrestrial) was inferred from GenBank and unpublished sequences. Within the division Chlorophyta, the classes Chlorophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae, and Ulvophyceae formed separate monophyletic or natural assemblages. Furthermore, this phylogeny strongly suggests that there were multiple migration events from aquatic environments (from both fresh and marine waters) to land within the Chlorophytan algae.

Algae are a large and diverse group of photosynthetic organisms that range in size from microscopic unicellular to multicellular forms. They usually inhabit marine and freshwater habitats. However, some are terrestrial and are capable of living in soil or above the soil surface (subaerial). Tropical rainforests, with humid climate and diverse habitats, offer phycologists with a rich field for biodiversity exploration. In the past, algae in these environments have been the objective of many studies. However, algae from the African Tropical rainforest have been greatly overlooked. This investigation is targeting the biodiversity of subaerial algae from an African tropical rainforest in Gabon (Africa) as well as a Neotropical forest in Panama (Central America). During this investigation biodiversity studies were based on traditional assessments as well as state of the art technology such as metagenomic approaches. In this study, morphology based and molecular phylogenetic protocols have been integrated to elucidate the biodiversity and systematics of the subaerial green algal order Trentepohliales from Gabon, Africa. Based on morphological observations 14 species of Trentepohlia and Printzina (belonging to the order Trentepohliales) were found to occur in Gabon (six were newly recorded for the continent). Molecular phylogenetics of the Trentepohliales from Africa suggested that the genera Trentepohlia and Printzina are not monophyletic lineages. These results also suggested that a taxonomic reassessment of the Trentepohliales is necessary. The African subaerial algal biodiversity was assessed using a novel metagenomic approach at a broader taxonomic level. Results of this approach suggest that the African rainforest is home to green algal (Chlorophyta), cyanobacteria, and diatoms (Sramenopiles) taxa. Finally, Panamanian subaerial diversity was also evaluated using a metagenomic approach with an ecological application: the biodiversity of the epiphytic flora was compared in four different tree heights as well as the potential effect of the orientation (East versus West). Results of this investigation indicate that the distribution of the algal diversity in terms of major groups was essentially following a similar pattern along the vertical gradient in the forest canopy. In contrast, the distribution of algal groups and specialized taxa was dissimilar between Western and Eastern faces of trees.

The Trentepohliales are a unique group of green algae, about which not much information has been previously published. The first chapter of this book includes descriptions and keys to all its genera. The book's primary purpose, however, is to facilitate the identification of taxa in the epiphytic tropical and subtropical genera Cephaleuros, Phycopeltis and Stomatochroon. The book includes descriptions and keys to 41 species and one variety in the three genera. These keys are based on the literature and the authors' light and electron microscope observations of materials collected throughout the world. The taxonomy, morphology, and ecology of each species form the heart of this book. Original descriptions with drawings and micrographs are included; there are 60 plates with 265+ illustrations. The book will be useful not only to phycologists but also plant pathologists and ecologists as a milestone study on the Trentepohliales.

Freshwater Algae of North America: Ecology and Classification, Second Edition is an authoritative and practical treatise on the classification, biodiversity, and ecology of all known genera of freshwater algae from North America. The book provides essential taxonomic and ecological information about one of the most diverse and ubiquitous groups of organisms on earth. This single volume brings together experts on all the groups of algae that occur in fresh waters (also soils, snow, and extreme inland environments). In the decade since the first edition, there has been an explosion of new information on the classification, ecology, and biogeography of many groups of algae, with the use of molecular techniques and renewed interest in biological diversity. Accordingly, this new edition covers updated classification information of most algal groups and the reassignment of many genera and species, as well as new research on harmful algal blooms. Extensive and complete Describes every genus of freshwater algae known from North America, with an analytical dichotomous key, descriptions of diagnostic features, and at least one image of every genus. Full-color images throughout provide superb visual examples of freshwater algae Updated Environmental Issues and Classifications, including new information on harmful algal blooms (HAB) Fully revised introductory chapters, including new topics on biodiversity, and taste and odor problems Updated to reflect the rapid advances in algal classification and taxonomy due to the widespread use of DNA technologies

This collection of essays is devoted to algae that are unexpectedly found in harsh habitats. The authors explain how these algae thrive in various temperature ranges, extreme pH values, salt solutions, UV radiation, dryness, heavy metals, anaerobic niches, various levels of illumination, and hydrostatic pressure. Not only do the essays provide clues about life on the edges of the Earth, but possibly elsewhere in the universe as well.

Climate change has shaped life in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Understanding the interactions between climate and biodiversity is a complex challenge to science. With contributions from 60 key researchers, this book examines the ongoing impact of climate change on the ecology and diversity of life on earth. It discusses the latest research within the fields of ecology and systematics, highlighting the increasing integration of their approaches and methods. Topics covered include the influence of climate change on evolutionary and ecological processes such as adaptation, migration, speciation and extinction, and the role of these processes in determining the diversity and biogeographic distribution of species and their populations. This book ultimately illustrates the necessity for global conservation actions to mitigate the effects of climate change in a world that is already undergoing a biodiversity crisis of unprecedented scale.
