The idea of a League of Nations has now taken firm root. The spade-work has been done. Leading statesmen of every country, in eloquent and glowing words, have proclaimed their adherence to the movement for its constitution after the war. It has extorted even the tribute paid to vice—hypocrisy. The seed has been sown. What manner of fruit it will bear will depend upon the knowledge and patience and care with which it is tended in its early growth.

The rise of the concept that all nations are equal has transformed international relations in the twentieth century, setting radically new terms for the conduct of war and peace, for economic relations, and for the organization of international society. It is the author's belief that uncritical adherence to this concept is a major stumbling block to the reorganization of the world community. This book is the first study of the historical antecedents and philosophical foundations of the concept of sovereign equality. The older concept of great-power primacy pictures states as abstract entities with a fictitious personality. Increasingly challenged since Alexis de Tocqueville, it has been supplanted by the opposing concept of sovereign equality, which was brought to world attention at the Second hague Peace Conference in 1907.

In this survey of political participation in seven nations - Nigeria, Austria, Japan, India, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia and the United States - the authors examine the relationship between social, economic, and educational factors and political participation. The book provides insight into an ongoing debate among political scientists and sociologist: why is political participation in some nations distributed evenly across economic, social, and educational lines, whereas other nations foster participation only by their privileged classes? The book treats politics not only as a dependent variable influenced by socioeconomic factors, but also as an independent variable that affects levels of political participation through variations in party systems and linkages between parties and other organizations.

This work addresses the question: how has the evolution of a legal regime within the United Nations and regional organisations influenced state behaviour regarding recognition of minority groups? The author assesses the implications of this regime for political theorists’ account of multiculturalism. This research bridges a gap between normative questions in political theory on multiculturalism and the international law on minorities. It does so by means of case studies of legal challenges involving two groups, namely, the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, and the Roma peoples in Europe. The author concludes by discussing the normative implications of the minority regime for helping to resolve conflicts that arise out of state treatment of minority groups.

Justice Without Borders written by Kok-Chor Tan and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-10-28 with History categories.

The cosmopolitan idea of justice is commonly accused of not taking seriously the special ties and commitments of nationality and patriotism. This is because the ideal of impartial egalitarianism, which is central to the cosmopolitan view, seems to be directly opposed to the moral partiality inherent to nationalism and patriotism. In this book, Kok-Chor Tan argues that cosmopolitan justice, properly understood, can accommodate and appreciate nationalist and patriotic commitments, setting limits for these commitments without denying their moral significance. This book offers a defense of cosmopolitan justice against the charge that it denies the values that ordinarily matter to people, and a defence of nationalism and patriotism against the charge that these morally partial ideals are fundamentally inconsistent with the obligations of global justice. Accessible and persuasive, this book will have broad appeal to political theorists and moral philosophers.
