This book is to be used for the class "Listening with Love." As faith leaders (both clergy and laity), we are called to embody the love and compassion of Christ in all we do, especially in caring for those who are hurting and in need. The Apostle Paul reminds us, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God" (2 Corinthian 1:3-4). It is in this spirit that we are excited to introduce "Listening with Love: Foundations of Pastoral Care." Listening with Love is designed to equip faith leaders with practical skills and perspectives to provide Christ centered, compassionate, effective pastoral care with those in congregations and communities who are struggling: from trauma, health issues, mental illness, loss, financial issues, addiction... whatever is causing distress. Jesus himself modeled the utmost compassion for the brokenhearted, the outcast, and the afflicted. He listened without judgment, offered hope and healing, and always pointed people to God's unfailing love. As his disciples, we too must learn to listen with love - with genuine empathy, patience, and grace. Through this training, you will: Gain biblical foundations for a compassionate, non-judgmental approach to pastoral care. Develop active listening skills to engage empathetically and guide others to their own solutions. Practice motivational interviewing techniques to help others navigate challenges and changes in their lives. Describe the impact of bias and stigma that can be common barriers to providing effective pastoral care. Learn to incorporate centering prayer to connect with God and to divine guidance in caregiving relationships while acknowledging pastoral caregivers' own need for spiritual renewal. Imagine the transformation in your church and community as you and your ministry leaders gain competence and confidence in providing pastoral care. Envision the unique opportunity to embody the compassionate and restorative love of Christ, The Great Shepherd, by providing hope and support for healing and transformation of individuals and communities. We invite you to join us for this transformational training to grow in the life-changing ministry of pastoral care. As we learn together to listen with the love of Christ, may we see God's kingdom come and his will be done in and through the lives of those we serve.

A distinguished historian, academic and occasional evangelist I know was hushed by his stunned wife after he said to a friend he was visiting in the hospital, "I hope you don't die." A sentiment delivered sincerely but oh-so-awkwardly. Expressing care to someone in need--whether within the community of faith or beyond--may seem the most natural thing in the world. For some, it is; for others, it's less so. All can improve. Learn to reach out with God's love and care for others as outlined in this practical book. Farabaugh offers a systemic path for pastoral care using the gifts of the laity in the church. "At a district Council on Ministries' meeting, our conversation focused on the realization that most of the clergy had no assistance in the area of pastoral care and felt overwhelmed by their many, sometimes conflicting, responsibilities," writes Farabaugh. "Most of the churches did not train anyone in caring ministries. Today it is time for clergy and laity to partner in caring for one another." Unique to this course is the ongoing training and accountability meetings outlined for those in this invaluable ministry. During the monthly meetings, participants report on what they have learned and also study aspects of caring for situations and conditions of life, such as illness, suffering, grief and loss. This book describes in an-easy-to read style how to listen to people who need to tell their story. Many are hurt, confused, afraid, or burdened by past experiences. They want someone to talk to who can help them understand what is robbing them of emotional or spiritual well-being. The book provides a dos and don'ts checklist for this effective kind of listening. It identifies what robs people of peace and the sources of their disquiet. It gives guidance as to how listeners can respond to what is said in a way that releases the storyteller and restores wholeness. It outlines the specific role of prayer as a healing and renewing tool for establishing newness of life, and it gives practical steps for those seeking to establish a listening ministry within their own Christian communities. It is an essential read for anyone engaged in pastoral care at any level.
