The prevention of handicapping conditions and the reduction of failure and disaffection in schools is the topic of this booklet, one of 16 texts designed for use in an Open University course on the education of handicapped students in the United Kingdom. Medical approaches to prevention, including those involving ethical issues, are explored. Examples of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention are given, and court cases are introduced to illustrate the range of ethical and moral considerations involved. In a section on at-risk children, development of screening procedures in schools is considered, as are preschool home intervention approaches and the underlying theories of compensatory education. Scottish attempts to reform the curriculum and school organization are cited as one example of efforts to change the educational system, thereby reducing the ill effects of school on children. A final section considers factors that limit change but also notes the possibility of positive change. The appendixes summarize reactions of Scottish teachers to their new roles and present a brief case study of a preschool community project in Scotland. (CL)

New Directions In Special Education written by Thomas Hehir and has been published by Harvard Education Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-11-01 with Education categories.

A comprehensive study that is also practical and realistic, New Directions in Special Education outlines principles for decisionmaking about special education at every level—from the family to the classroom, school, and district—and for state and federal policy. With this volume, leading scholar and disability advocate Thomas Hehir opens a new round of debate on the future of special education. Extending the conceptual framework developed in his seminal 2002 article in the Harvard Educational Review, "Eliminating Ableism in Education," Hehir examines the ways that cultural attitudes about disability systematically distort the education of children with special needs and uses this analysis to lay out a fresh approach to special education policy and practice. Hehir traces the roots of "ableism"—the pervasive devaluation of people with disabilities—and shows how negative attitudes continue to shape debates in the field. He assesses recent trends in special education policy, particularly the shift of emphasis from compliance to outcomes, and discusses in depth the successes and limitations of the inclusion movement. He also investigates the impact of standards-based reforms on children with disabilities and critically examines the promise of Universal Design for Learning.

Rethinking Disability written by Patrick Devlieger and has been published by Maklu this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-15 with Social Science categories.

The act of life is a lived experience, common and unique, that ties each of us to every other lived experience. The fact of disability does not alter this fundamental truth. In this edition of Rethinking Disability: World Perspectives in Culture and Society, we are presented with a system of thinking that considers the values of disability, as a resource, as a creative source of culture that moves disability out of the realm of victimized people and insurmountable barriers, and provides opportunities to use the experience of disability to enter into networks that recognize strengths of differing abilities. The authors within will intrigue you, will move you, will charm you, but always will challenge your notion of sameness and difference as they confront the construct and (de)construct of disability and ableism. They present compelling arguments for viewing disABILITY through the multiple lenses of disability culture. They explore themes and issues that transcend past and origins, time and place, nuances of genetics, to experiences of present and becoming, and towards the future and beyond mere human, yet always intrinsically connected to being human. This book is intended for all audiences who dare to confront difference and sameness within themselves and in connection with others; to inspire researchers who wish to explore, and examine disability across social, cultural and economic barriers. It is an invitation to push away the barriers, bring ableism inside to a place where the prosthesis is no longer the elephant in the room.
