"Erasing the prosthetic of memory" (ETPOM) is a thesis that fosters an open model of thinking. ETPOM enables the perception of architectural entities to evolve by disrupting our existing memories, which govern our reception of space. This thesis offers a challenge to the prosthesis of architectural memory repetitively embedded into the creators' and occupants' minds alike. The architectural prosthetic of memory is the pre-existing knowledge we collectively accumulate and is visible in the domination of ancient styles such as classicism in our modern cities. The historical baggage embedded into the architects' memories is constantly solidifying from a lack of questioning. To probe forgetting ETPOM complicates and disrupts. Architecture relies on the memory stored in the mind's inner chambers as a means of comfort. When the comfort of memory is rattled, a void opens. By disrupting the closed model of architecture governing our experience, different pathways of perception are allowed to arise. Occupants are freed to become lost within a multiplicity of moments. Architectural details that form questioning events instigate the mind to open its perspective. Detailing for forgetting unveils a strand of architecture that goes against the normal model we follow, where experience is not limited by what we remember. In acting as disruption, ETPOM uses different terminology to give a sense of the transitory state of experience; a means to understand the before unnamed. Oliver Sacks the famous neurologist questioned "As for sickness are we certain we are able to live without it?" This thesis is a disruption; it is the sickness. Understanding is based on relativity not universality. Forgetting allows a spontaneous narrative to arise based on contrast. Without a disruption to jog us back into the present moment, we will continue to experience space as if it were a phantom of memories past.

More than a retelling of the origin story of a democracy born from an intimate connection with the land, this book wagers that socially responsible agrarian mythmaking should be a vital part of a food ethic of resistance if we are to rectify the destructive tendencies in our contemporary food system. Through a careful examination of several case studies, Rooted Resistance traverses the ground of agrarian myth in modern America. The authors investigate key figures and movements in the history of modern agrarianism, including the World War I victory garden efforts, the postwar Country Life movement for the vindication of farmers’ rights, the Southern Agrarian critique of industrialism, and the practical and spiritual prophecy of organic farming put forth by J. I. Rodale. This critical history is then brought up to date with recent examples such as the contested South Central Farm in urban Los Angeles and the spectacular rise and fall of the Chipotle “Food with Integrity” branding campaign. A critical exploration of the ways public participation has transformed commemoration and civic engagement in the United States In the last three decades ordinary Americans launched numerous grassroots commemorations and official historical institutions became more open to popular participation. In this first book-length study of participatory memory practices, Ekaterina V. Haskins critically examines this trend by asking how and with what consequences participatory forms of commemoration have reshaped the rhetoric of democratic citizenship. Approaching commemorations as both representations of civic identity and politically consequential sites of stranger interaction, Popular Memories investigates four distinct examples of participatory commemoration: the United States Postal Service's "Celebrate the Century" stamp and education program, the September 11 Digital Archive, the first post-Katrina Carnival in New Orleans, and a traveling memorial to the human cost of the Iraq War. Despite differences in sponsorship, genre, historical scope, and political purpose, all of these commemorations relied on voluntary participation of ordinary citizens in selecting, producing, or performing interpretations of distant or recent historical events. These collectively produced interpretations—or popular memories—in turn prompted interactions between people, inviting them to celebrate, to mourn, or to bear witness. The book's comparison of the four case studies suggests that popular memories make for stronger or weaker sites of civic engagement depending on whether or not they allow for public affirmation of the individual citizen's contribution and for experiencing alternative identities and perspectives. By systematically accounting for grassroots memory practices, consumerism, tourism, and rituals of popular identity, Haskins's study enriches our understanding of contemporary memory culture and citizenship.

This book examines the role of memory in animation, as well as the ways in which the medium of animation can function as a technology of remembering and forgetting. By analyzing a wide range of different animation types, from stop motion to computer animation, and from cell animated cartoons to painted animation, this book explores the ways in which animation can function as a representational medium. The five parts of the book discuss the interrelation of animation and memory through the lens of materiality, corporeality, animation techniques, the city, and animated documentaries. These discussions raise a number of questions: how do animation films bring forth personal and collective pasts? What is the role of found footage, objects, and sound in the material and affective dimensions of animation? How does animation serve political ends?
