The Inheritance Of Wealth written by Daniel Halliday and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Philosophy categories.

Daniel Halliday examines the moral grounding of the right to bequeath or transfer wealth. He engages with contemporary concerns about wealth inequality, class hierarchy, and taxation, while also drawing on the history of the egalitarian, utilitarian, and liberal traditions in political philosophy. He presents an egalitarian case for restricting inherited wealth, arguing that unrestricted inheritance is unjust to the extent that it enables and enhances the intergenerational replication of inequality. Here, inequality is understood in a group-based sense: the unjust effects of inheritance are principally in its tendency to concentrate certain opportunities into certain groups. This results in what Halliday describes as 'economic segregation'. He defends a specific proposal about how to tax inherited wealth: roughly, inheritance should be taxed more heavily when it comes from old money. He rebuts some sceptical arguments against inheritance taxes, and makes suggestions about how tax schemes should be designed.

The Human Elder In Nature Culture And Society written by David Gutmann and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-11 with Psychology categories.

Chronicling the evolution of David Gutmann's cross-cultural, empirical studies on which his developmental theories of aging are based, this volume reveals how descriptions of the developmental sequences (as they show themselves in older men and women) lead to identification of the psychological forces that drive these processes across the years. This book of new and previously published work first reports on the research that buttressed the more hopeful view of aging as a period of growth and then sets forth the broad, unifying ideas that came out of the empirical work. These concepts include the theory of the "Parental Imperative"—the engine of human development in early and later adulthood; observations on the "gentling" of the older man and the increased assertiveness of the older woman; essays about the unique qualities of aging leaders and the special role of the aged as representatives of the community to its gods; and ideas about the evolutionary basis of the third age—aging as a human adaptation, a legitimate life stage, rather than the grim prelude to death. The last group of selections focuses on the clinical perspective, applying developmental insights to the psychological disorders of later life, ultimately leading to a more hopeful view of these conditions as well as more effective approaches to their treatment. Each section contains original commentary placing the material in the context of current research. This text is for gerontologists, for all students of human development, and for all thoughtful readers who are concerned with the great themes of the human life-cycle—in-cluding their own.

Writing World History 1800 2000 written by Benedikt Stuchtey and has been published by Oxford University Press on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

Writing World History contributes to the highly topical debate on world history by addressing the subject comparatively. Building on the current academic as well as public interest in world history in the Western and non-Western world, and especially in the United States, this volume links a critical investigation of the traditions of world history-writing with the most recent theoretical, methodological, and ideological debates on the subject. It is original in two ways: first, it present different modern approaches to contemporary world history and its debates. Secondly, it offers a critical analysis of the historical traditions of world history over the past 200 years by providing a selection of case studies. From a transcultural perspective, these demonstrate different ideas about the world and the relationship between 'periphery' and 'centre' in various geographical areas such as the USA, Britain, Germany, France, and Russia; Africa; and China, India, and Japan. The essays make clear that interpretations of the world reflect perceptions of one's own culture, and that the notion of the world can be used to legitimize political aims. Since this field emerged in the USA and developed into a separate subdiscipline, American concepts of world history have dominated the discourse. The objective is to go beyond the comparison of Western and non-Western concepts by offering a critical evaluation of their theoretical foundations, ideological implications, and moral connotations. The volume offers a critique of a Eurocentric and an ethnocentric world history.
