Spätestens seit dem Ausbruch der internationalen Bankenkrise im Jahr 2007, die sich im weiteren Verlauf zu einer weltweiten Finanzkrise entwickelt hat, stehen Finanzinstrumente hinsichtlich ihrer Bilanzierung unter intensiver Beobachtung. Gerade bei Finanzinstituten aber auch bei Nicht-Banken machen Finanzinstrumente einen wesentlichen Bestandteil der Bilanzsumme aus. Die noch heute spürbaren Auswirkungen der Krise belegen als Beispiel die Bedeutung von Finanzinstrumenten für die Weltwirtschaft. Als Folge der Krise hat das International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) im Jahr 2008 die Überarbeitung der relevanten Standards der internationalen Rechnungslegungsvorschriften (IFRS) intensiviert, die bis heute andauert. Ziel ist unter anderem eine Vereinfachung der Regularien hinsichtlich Klassifizierung und Bewertung von Finanzinstrumenten. Diese vereinfachte Vorgehensweise wird in IRFS 9 geregelt, der nach Veröffentlichung den bisher regelnden IAS 39 ersetzen wird. Nach bereits zahlreichen Terminverschiebungen ist aktuell der 01.01.2015 als Zeitpunkt für die erstmalige verpflichtende Anwendung von IFRS 9 angepeilt. Die folgende Ausarbeitung soll dem Leser einen Einblick in die Erfassung finanzieller Vermögenswerte und Verbindlichkeiten in den Bilanzen von Nicht-Banken nach den derzeit gültigen IFRS geben. Dabei werden die Kernaussagen der für die Rechungslegung ausschlaggebenden Standards (IAS/IFRS) und die zu erledigenden Schritte bis zur Bilanzerfassung erläutert. Zu Beginn muss ermittelt werden, ob es sich bei der zu bewertenden Position um ein Finanzinstrument handelt. Diese Definition bzw. Abgrenzung nimmt der IAS 32 vor und ist in Kapital 2 dieser Arbeit detailliert ausgeführt. Liegt ein Finanzinstrument im Sinne des IAS 32 vor, regelt der IAS 39, wie in Kapitel drei und vier beschrieben, den Ansatz und die Bewertung der Position. Darüber hinaus werden bestimmte Finanzinstrumente aus dem Anwendungsbereich des IAS 39 ausgeschlossen. Dies trifft insbesondere auf Leasingverhältnisse (IAS 17), Versicherungsverträge (IFRS 4), Pensionsverpflichtungen (IAS 19) und Anteile an Tochter- (IAS27), Gemeinschafts- (IAS 31) und assoziierten Unternehmen (IAS 28) zu. Auf diese, andere Standards betreffende Regelungen, wird im Verlaufe dieser Ausarbeitung nicht weiter eingegangen.
