Document from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, , language: English, abstract: In an era where communication has become synonymous to speaking English, it has become mandatory not only to learn the language but put it into terms to sustain in the competing world. Considering the technicality of the language, it is surely difficult to convey the words spoken, because it is not just about speaking English but it is to make it understandable and lucid. Just as written English is constrained by barricades of Grammar, so does spoken English is restrained by both Grammar as well as phonetics of speech. Dealing with such great tides of difficulty inherent in speaking English, there is a need to simplify the vocalization of this global language. This book is written especially for University Students, but all stages of learners may also find it useful. The explanations are made as simple as possible. Special care had been taken to cover all the items which are very useful for all non English medium academic background students. Explanations are mostly in ordinary everyday English. This book describes standard modern British English, and gives realistic examples of spoken and written language (both formal and informal). The book, ‘Speaking English Made Easy’ is an attempt to put forth an easy and effortless way for learning the language. The work presents a unique understanding to bring the language to one’s finger tips. Assembling the various descendants of Grammar, the book interleaves into the technicality of speaking English. The book is also a useful guide for students taking on competitive exams on English. This work can definitely stand on as the sound whose echo vibrates around the world.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Hamburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik ), course: Parts of Speech, 6 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This term paper is concerning Construction Grammar and the way it attempts to handle parts of speech categories like nouns, verbs and adjectives. The seminar this paper was written for proved in a manifold of ways that when we restrict ourselves to the categories provided by traditional grammar, we may face serious difficulties which call into question the fundamental categorizations of such grammar. These problems, or potential problems, are the subject matter of the first part of this paper. In the second part, I will give an overview of Construction Grammar. Since the concept of construction is central to Construction Grammar, I will first clarify the notion of construction outside of the Construction Grammar framework in 2.1., before moving to an account in 2.2 of those features that can be seen as the smallest common denominator for defining constructions within different Construction Grammars. One of my principal findings is the differing manners in which Construction Grammars in general, and a specific variant of Construction Grammar, namely Croft's Radical Construction Grammar, address the issue of parts of speech. Part three will present Croft's grammar as an answer to one of the central questions raised in this seminar, namely, which model is most adequate for categorising word classes in a single language like English but also in a cross-linguistic sense. This examination will be followed by some concluding remarks in part four.

Modern German Grammar: A Practical Guide, Third Edition is an innovative reference guide to German, combining traditional and function-based grammar in a single volume. The Grammar is divided into two parts. Part A covers grammatical categories such as word order, nouns, verbs and adjectives. Part B is organised according to language functions and notions such as: making introductions asking for something to be done delivering a speech possibility satisfaction. The book addresses learners’ practical needs and presents grammar in both a traditional and a communicative setting. New to this edition, and building on feedback from the previous edition: The rules of the latest (and so far final) spelling reform have been implemented throughout. Examples of usage have been updated and consideration given to Swiss and Austrian variants. The chapter on register has been expanded and now includes youth language and frequently used Anglicisms in German. The Index now has even more key words; it has also been redesigned to differentiate between German words, grammar terms, and functions, thus making it more user-friendly. The Grammar assumes no previous grammatical training and is intended for all those who have a basic knowledge of German, from intermediate learners in schools and adult education to undergraduates taking German as a major or minor part of their studies. The Grammar is accompanied by a third edition of Modern German Grammar Workbook (ISBN 978-0-415-56725-1) which features exercises and activities directly linked to the Grammar. Ruth Whittle is Lecturer, John Klapper is Professor of Foreign Language Pedagogy, Katharina Glöckel is the Austrian Lektorin and Bill Dodd is Professor of Modern German Studies – all at the University of Birmingham. Christine Eckhard-Black is Tutor and Advisor in German at the Oxford University Language Centre.

The central theme of this volume is the work of Sabahattin Ali, the Turkish author and translator from German into Turkish who achieved posthumous success with his novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (The Madonna in the Fur Coat). Our contributors analyze this novel, which takes place largely in Germany, and several other texts by Ali in the context of world literature, (cultural) translation, and intertextuality. Their articles go far beyond the intercultural love affair that has typically dominated the discussion of Madonna. Other articles consider Zafer Şenocak’s essay collection Deutschsein and transcultural learning through picture books. An interview with Selim Özdoğan rounds out the issue.
