This volume contains a collective biography of those students of the medieval university of Erfurt (founded in 1392), for whom a study of the iura (canon and civil law) can be demonstrated. On the base of a prosopographical apparatus of more than 700 biographies (available on CD-ROM) their social antecedents, their courses of studies, their careers and professional activities are analyzed. The book tries to find statistically supported answers for questions, which have been discussed by German constitutional, legal and social historians for a long time; questions which can be summarized under the term “Verwissenschaftlichung” of governmental action in late medieval Germany. The volume also presents a contribution to the history of the medieval university of Erfurt from a prosopographical perspective.

This book deals with the life and work of the learned counsellor Johannes Hofmann von Lieser (Lysura) (a 1459), a close friend of Nicholas of Cusa, known for the political verse "Cusa et Lysura pervertunt omnia iura". The thesis is examining principally three topics: (1) First, the diplomatic career of Lieser, with a focus on his political role in the German politics towards the Council of Basle (1431-1447) and in the so called "Reichsreform" in the 1450s, and third on Liesers engagement as a professor of Canon Law at the University of Louvain from 1456 to 1458. (2) The second part analyses Liesers political speeches at the imperial diets of Regensburg and Frankfurt am Main (1454). Thematically, the analysis regards chiefly the "Reichsreform", but also the history of the Teutonic Order. Methodologically, two different aims of political speech are juxtaposed: on the one hand the rhetorical approach of German learned counsellors, on the other hand the humanistic one, represented by Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who revised one of Liesers speeches. Furthermore, it is shown that the diffusion of political texts in the fifteenth century depended - not exclusively, but also - on their applicability in oratory, as learned counsellors worked with these texts as professional orators. (3) The third part is dedicated to Liesers up to now completely unknown juridical work. Several "consilia" and a "repetitio" are analysed in order to show how Lieser worked as a jurist and how he the profile of learned counsellors as jurists can contribute to a better understanding of them as politicians.

The late Middle Ages saw the emergence of professional jurists as a new functionary elite. The study approaches this phenomenon by focusing on a singular individual: Dietrich von Bocksdorf, Professor of Canon Law in Leipzig, learned counselor to the elector of Saxony, bishop of Naumburg. The book thereby breaks new ground. It offers not only a biography, but explores large and previously unused and largely unknown collections of more than 500 papers from the legal practice, written by the Leipzig Ordinarius. Based on this unique material the book examines for the first time spheres of influence, circles of clients and occupational fields of an individual late medieval german jurist. Legal opinions (“consilia”) and pleadings, but as well working tools for the emerging learned practice of “Common Saxon Law” made by Dietrich von Bocksdorf, provide deep insights into the beginnings of the epochal change from the traditional-archaic jurisdiction of the Middle Ages to the scholarly and written practice of law in the early modern world.

Die Studie verdeutlicht den vielfältigen Stellenwert, den Geschenke in der Stadtpolitik thüringischer Städte am Übergang vom Mittelalter zur Frühen Neuzeit besaßen. Obwohl die Praxis des Schenkens nicht die Aufgabe eines bestimmten städtischen Amtes war, fasst sie Sebastian von Birgelen als eigenständiges Handlungsfeld des Stadtrates auf und beschreibt sie anhand ihrer Wesensmerkmale, Funktions- und Wirkungsweise. Die daraus gewonnenen Befunde ermöglichen Einblicke in das Phänomen der Geschenkpraxis, das untrennbar mit dem Werden und Fortgang des Städtewesens verbunden war. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie gründen fast ausschließlich auf ungedrucktem, nicht digitalisiertem und teilweise noch unerschlossenem Archivmaterial, das sich in über 20 thüringischen Staats-, Kreis- und Stadtarchiven befindet.
