Excerpt from Erinnerungen, Vol. 1: Prager Jugendjahre Raufen mit Altersgenossen mehr zu lernen ist als aus der Geschichte des Königs Hiskias. Desto besser, wenn der Vater kein Trunkenbold ist, wenn der erfahrene Vater oder die mitleidige Mutter das Kind mit Bewußt sein von den Büchern fortjagt und spricht: "sei meinet wegen ein schlechter Schüler; sei nur ein glücklicher Junge und werde ein tüchtiger Mensch! Unsere Schule ist wie eine epidemische Kinderkrank heit, die jeder von uns durchmachen muß; unzählige sind an dieser Krankheit gestorben, unzählige sind zeit lebens seelische Krüppel geblieben. Es wäre gut, Eigen berichte über den Verlauf der Krankheit zu sammeln. Recht gute Anfänge sind schon gemacht werden. Die Gesetzgeber würden dann wenigstens erfahren, wie den Schülern unter der Herrschaft der alten Gesetze zumute war. Der Leser müßte manches zufällige Vorkommnis, müßte manches allzu persönliche Urteil mit in den Kauf nehmen; aber wir würden endlich einmal den Schrei der Kreatur hören und nicht immer wieder die flustern de Totensprache einer offiziösen Wissenschaft. Es wäre vielleicht überhaupt günstig für die angewandte Medi zin, wenn die Krankengeschichten nicht von den Arz ten, sondern von den Patienten geschrieben würden. Man wird mir einwenden wollen, daß nicht alle er wachsenen Menschen mit Haß und Zorn an ihre Schul zeit zurückdenken. Es gibt sicherlich viele Menschen, die zu guten Staatsbürgern prädestiniert sind, die alle Polizeiverordnungen löblich finden und die darum auch an unsern Schuleinrichtungen nichts auszusetzen wis sen. Es gibt ferner an allen unseren Schulen, den nie dersten wie den hochsten, viele prächtige Lehrer, die ihren Beruf lieben und die in stetem Kampfe mit dem Schulreglement und mit ihren Vorgesetzen den Kindernund den jungen Leuten freundliche Fuhrer auf der Höllenfahrt der Schule sind. Es kommt aber noch eins hinzu; die guten Menschen, die mit manchem Wenn und Aber freundlich und dankbar an ihre Schulzeit zu rückdenken, verwechseln sehr häufig die Stimmung der glücklichen Jugendzeit, die sich nicht einmal von der Schule unterkriegen läßt, mit der Schule selbst; wer es einstens ernst nahm mit den Schulpflichten, und wer es nachher ernst nimmt mit den Pflichten gegen die eigenen Kinder, der kann nicht so optimistisch von seiner Schulzeit denken. Ernste Männer, die ernste Schüler waren, dürften mit seltenen Ausnahmen einig sein in einem Verdammungsurteil über die alte Schule, die immer noch die unsere ist. The German-speaking inhabitants of the Bohemian capital developed a group identification and defined themselves as a minority as they dealt with growing Czech political and economic strength in the city and with their own sharp numerical decline: in the 1910 census only seven percent of the metropolitan population claimed that they spoke primarily German. The study uses census returns, extensive police and bureaucratic records, newspaper accounts, and memoirs on local social and political life to show how the German minority and the Czech majority developed demographically and economically in relation to each other and created separate social and political lives for their group members. The study carefully traces the roles of occupation, class, religion, and political ideology in the formation of German group loyalties and social solidarities.

While much has been written about East European and German Jewry, relatively little attention has been given to the Jews of Bohemia and Moravia, although they played an important role in the industrial, economic, and cultural life of central Europe. This book examines the social and cultural history of the Jewish community in Czechoslovakia from the Age of Enlightenment to the middle of the twentieth century. From family histories, newspaper and magazine articles, wills, and letters, Wilma Iggers has culled descriptions of life, customs, and local color; portrayals of important individuals and families; stories of individuals depicting the transition of a culture and a people from the Middle Ages to modern times; an examination of complaints about the deterioration of the religious communities and of religious instruction; and the history of anti- Semitism. Practically all reports reflect the difficult struggle for survival as Jews. The texts also address special legislation regarding the Jews, industrialization and urbanization, changes in religious and familial structures, growing involvement in the culture and politics of the worldly communities, cultural assimilation, changes in stereotypes about the Jews, and the effects of political forces from outside. The Jews of Bohemia and Moravia begins with the expulsion of the Jews from Prague by Empress Maria Theresa in 1744, an event which caused a shock that remained in the Jewish consciousness for a long time. The book concludes with texts from the middle of the twentieth century dealing with the most recent generation of Bohemian and Moravian Jews. Despite fluctuations and radical breaks, the time span from 1744 to 1952 constitutes a single unit that encompasses striking cultural and economic developments as well as anti-Semitism and cynicism unmatched even in the Middle Ages. With their strong emotional ties to the land of their birth, Bohemian and Moravian Jews are closer to the Central and West Europeans than to the Jews from Eastern Europe. Although Jews are often criticized for adapting themselves easily to other countries--meaning that they have no real roots--their strong emotional ties to their countries of origin are clearly expressed in a number of documents included in this book.
