Ausgangspunkt dieser Frage ist eine phänomenologisch-hermeneutische Architekturtheorie, die sich als empirische Theorie versteht und in der Lebenswelt gründet. Am Beispiel zweier Freizeitparks untersuchen die Beiträge, wie die Gestalter beim Entwerfen von atmosphärischen Räumen vorgehen und was Besucher auf der Basis ihrer Lebenserfahrung in diesen Räumen erleben. Es zeigt sich, dass Atmosphären vor allem als Erlebnisse wirken: Sie werden von Architekten vor ihrem biographischen Hintergrund antizipiert, entstehen jedoch erst in der leiblichen Begegnung des Erlebenden mit seiner Umgebung.

Griffero first outlines the general and atmospheric characters of quasi-things, and then considers examples such as pain, shame, the gaze, and twilight—which he argues is responsible for penetrating and suggestive moods precisely because of its vagueness.
