Ernest Hemingway's life was as romantic and exciting as anything in his novels and stories -- and this magnificently illustrated large-format volume captures many of his best years. The more than 150 candid black-and-white photos of Hemingway and friends at work and at play, were taken by his friend and associate, Roberto Herrera Sotolongo, and had never appeared anywhere until the publication of this book. Another 50 full-color photos taken more recently capture the different atmospheres of the writer's several homes.

In arguably his most famous work, Ernest Hemingway wrote, “A man can be destroyed, but not defeated.” It is perhaps this single line from The Old Man and the Sea that gives the most insight into the mind of one of the greatest writers in American history. Hemingway was a man who rejected defeat at every opportunity. He was a man whose desire to be the best won him respect, but also lost him friends. He lived his life the way he wanted, rarely stopping to apologize. Even in death, Hemingway proved his determination, trying to take his own life at least twice before he ultimately succeeded with the final blast of a shotgun. Hemingway served as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in WWI. While in Italy on duty, he decided that he was not near enough to the action and went closer to the front. Just as he got to the front, an enemy mortar shell exploded in close proximity to Hemingway. Despite being injured in the blast, Ernest found a young Italian soldier who was severely hurt and carried him to safety, taking several rounds of machine gun fire to his leg. For his bravery, Hemingway was awarded the Italian silver medal of valor. While in the hospital still recovering from his injuries, Hemingway fell in love with a nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. Ernest had to return to America, but he vowed that one day he would marry von Kurowsky. It was not to be, however, as Hemingway received a letter only months after returning home saying that his love had fallen for an Italian officer. He was devastated, and his initial broken heart may explain why he made a habit out of leaving women before they could leave him. Hemingway was married four times and had affairs in each of his marriages.

Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist, short story author, reporter, and sportsman whose spare, understated writing style, which he termed the “iceberg theory,” had a profound influence on 20th century fiction. But beyond his literary legacy, Hemingway’s adventurous lifestyle and public persona made him an idol of younger generations. He authored most of his classic works between the mid-1920s and 1950s, earning the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. His oeuvre includes seven novels, six short story collections, and two nonfiction books, with additional works published posthumously. Many of his writings are considered masterpieces of American literature. Born in suburban Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway worked briefly as a reporter for The Kansas City Star after high school before enlisting to drive ambulances on the Italian front in World War I. Severely wounded in 1918, he returned home traumatized. His combat experiences provided material for his breakthrough 1929 novel, A Farewell to Arms. In 1921 Hemingway married his first wife Hadley Richardson. They relocated to Paris where he worked as a foreign correspondent and fell in with the modernist “Lost Generation” writers and artists. This expatriate milieu inspired his first novel The Sun Also Rises, released in 1926. After divorcing Richardson in 1927, Hemingway wed his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. Following the Spanish Civil War, which he covered as a journalist and informed his novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, Pfeiffer and Hemingway divorced in 1940. He next married fellow writer Martha Gellhorn, later leaving her for Mary Welsh who he met in London during World War II. As a journalist, Hemingway witnessed the D-Day invasion and liberation of Paris.

A Moveable Feast is a 1964 memoir by American author Ernest Hemingway about his years as a struggling expat journalist and writer in Paris during the 1920s. It was published posthumously. The book details Hemingway's first marriage to Hadley Richardson and his associations with other cultural figures of the Lost Generation in Interwar France. The memoir consists of various personal accounts by Hemingway and involves many notable figures of the time, such as Sylvia Beach, Hilaire Belloc, Bror von Blixen-Finecke, Aleister Crowley, John Dos Passos, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ford Madox Ford, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, Pascin, Ezra Pound, Evan Shipman, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas and Hermann von Wedderkop. The work also references the addresses of specific locations such as bars, cafes, and hotels, many of which can still be found in Paris today. Ernest Hemingway's suicide in July 1961 delayed the publication of the book due to copyright issues and several edits which were made to the final draft. The memoir was published posthumously in 1964, three years after Hemingway's death, by his fourth wife and widow, Mary Hemingway, based upon his original manuscripts and notes. An edition altered and revised by his grandson, Seán Hemingway, was published in 2009.
