I explore the relationship between eroÌ4s, recollection, and virtue in Socrates's palinode in Plato's Phaedrus, a relationship which few scholars have addressed. I develop Laura Candiotto's thesis regarding the epistemic relationship between eroÌ4s and recollection by exploring its implication for a soul's growth in virtue. I also argue that Irwin's and Gonzalez's account of the ethical implications of eroÌ4s and recollection neglects the perilous interplay between partial recollection and eroÌ4s, whereby the very relationship that drives the soul's growth in virtue can also lead the soul to vice. I conclude that, for Socrates, moral development is not a process than one can perfectly control. EroÌ4s is a powerful drive that is a necessary part of moral growth, and recollection both sparks eroÌ4s and gives the soul the resources to discipline eroÌ4s. But since most people recollect partially, moral growth is fraught with peril: stoking eroÌ4s in a soul risks spurring a soul to betray its countrymen for the sake of ambition, like Alcibiades, but refusing to draw a soul through eroÌ4s risks abandoning a soul to unphilosophical complacency, like Isocrates. But even with these perils, the erotic path is one with glimmers of hope because of the universal recollective capacity of the soul, whereby all souls are directed to the Forms, even if they do not clearly recognize the Forms as the true objects of their desires.

This dissertation examines the nature of learning as recollection across Plato's dialogues. The investigation treats five architectonic questions commonly debated among Plato scholars: 1) 'Who recollects?'; 2) 'How do we experience recollection?'; 3) 'What are the objects of recollection?'; 4) 'How does recollection enable genuine philosophical inquiry?'; and, finally, 5) 'How is recollection a way of becoming virtuous?' I adopt a holistic approach looking at the epistemological, ontological, and ethical aspects of recollection, while treating these registers in relation to the dramatic context of each dialogue.The dissertation is divided into three commentary chapters. In the chapter dedicated to the Meno, the account of recollection articulates the conditions for learning as recollection: ontologically, the soul must be immortal and immaterial if she is to grasp the immaterial realities recollection seeks to understand; epistemologically, recollection proceeds by degrees from the excising of false opinions to the discovery and solidification of truth in the soul; and, finally, if it is possible that virtue is cultivated in the soul by true opinion and knowledge, then it is possible for the stages of recollection to inspire the cultivation of virtue. The Phaedo's recollection account explicitly traces the connection between recollection and the cultivation of virtue. The dialogue defends recollection's aim as the recovery of the soul's interior phroneÌ4sis ordered towards knowing the causal sources of being and goodness, the eternal Forms, which in turn guide and inspire the soul's virtuous disposition and choices. Finally, the Phaedrus's recollection account treats what ultimately motivates the soul to recover her own forgotten wisdom, namely, desire for the Forms alongside philosophical self-persuasion in speech. This rightly-ordered desire motivates the cultivation of virtuous habits in relation to others as well as in the individual; for, each lesser love becomes incorporated into and perfected by the budding philosopher's highest love of the Forms.The dissertation concludes that all three recollection accounts are complementary, even though they emphasize distinct aspects of recollection and take up questions left unanswered by prior accounts. Recollection is discovered to be that activity by which the immortal, immaterial soul recovers her understanding of the causes and structures of being through an intentional, self-aware inquiry. This wisdom is revealed as both contemplative and practical, for Socrates cannot conceive of the highest form of wisdom that does not wholly alter the person for the better. Thus, the recollective recovery of wisdom in the soul harmonizes the individual's intellect, thoughts, and arguments, disposition, choices, and actions to conform to the truth about being and goodness. Recollection in all three dialogues therefore aims at cultivating authentic virtue in the soul.

In Essential Vulnerabilities, Deborah Achtenberg contests Emmanuel Levinas’s idea that Plato is a philosopher of freedom for whom thought is a return to the self. Instead, Plato, like Levinas, is a philosopher of the other. Nonetheless, Achtenberg argues, Plato and Levinas are different. Though they share the view that human beings are essentially vulnerable and essentially in relation to others, they conceive human vulnerability and responsiveness differently. For Plato, when we see beautiful others, we are overwhelmed by the beauty of what is, by the vision of eternal form. For Levinas, we are disrupted by the newness, foreignness, or singularity of the other. The other, for him, is new or foreign, not eternal. The other is unknowable singularity. By showing these similarities and differences, Achtenberg resituates Plato in relation to Levinas and opens up two contrasting ways that self is essentially in relation to others.

Christine M. Korsgaard presents an account of the foundation of practical reason and moral obligation. Moral philosophy aspires to understand the fact that human actions, unlike the actions of the other animals, can be morally good or bad, right or wrong. Few moral philosophers, however, have exploited the idea that actions might be morally good or bad in virtue of being good or bad of their kind - good or bad as actions. Just as we need to know that it is the function of the heart to pump blood to know that a good heart is one that pumps blood successfully, so we need to know what the function of an action is in order to know what counts as a good or bad action. Drawing on the work of Plato, Aristotle, and Kant, Korsgaard proposes that the function of an action is to constitute the agency and therefore the identity of the person who does it. As rational beings, we are aware of, and therefore in control of, the principles that govern our actions. A good action is one that constitutes its agent as the autonomous and efficacious cause of her own movements. These properties correspond, respectively, to Kant's two imperatives of practical reason. Conformity to the categorical imperative renders us autonomous, and conformity to the hypothetical imperative renders us efficacious. And in determining what effects we will have in the world, we are at the same time determining our own identities. Korsgaard develops a theory of action and of interaction, and of the form interaction must take if we are to have the integrity that, she argues, is essential for agency. On the basis of that theory, she argues that only morally good action can serve the function of action, which is self-constitution.
