Jahrhunderts so gut wie vergessen: Thomas Gale (1636-1702), Johannes Braun (1628-1708), Adriaan Reland (1676-1718) und Eusèbe Renaudot (1646-1720) bekleideten wichtige Posten, verfügten über weitreichende Netzwerke und schrieben vielgelesene Bücher. Heute sind sie höchstens Spezialistinnen und Spezialisten ein Begriff. Aber lautet das Versprechen der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit nicht, überzeitlich gültige Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen, und damit ewig währenden Nachruhm zu erlangen? Warum sonst versicherten sich die Gelehrten mit einem Zitat von Horaz beständig gegenseitig, ihre Werke seien "Denkmäler, dauerhafter als Erz"? Tobias Winnerling gibt darauf eine Antwort: Weil sie genau wussten, dass wissenschaftliche Erkenntnis veraltet, Paradigmen und Disziplinen wechseln, und ewiger Nachruhm nur so lange währt, wie es Menschen gibt, die davon sprechen. In seiner wissenshistorischen Studie stellt er die Konstruktionsarbeit akademischen Erinnerns in den Vordergrund und zeigt über drei Jahrhunderte auf, wie Gelehrte in Vergessenheit gerieten.
