Nuclear ftedicine is not and has not been a purely imaging discipline. It is function analysis that has always been the focal pOint. This fact has become particularly obvious in the last few years through the employment of nev short-lived radionuclides, new technical procedures and data processing. The disadvantage of function analysis in Inclear ftedicine through the use of radioactively labeled compounds is that more and more complicated and expensive equipment his to be used. A further characteristic is that these machines are stationary, and that the patients cannot be examined under physiological conditions. For technical reasons the x-camera is developing in the direction of mea suring mainly the so-ca~led 'soft' I-emitters at the present time. On the other hand, positron emitters are the radionuclides which are of interest for metabolic functions. At present, positron cameras are even more e~pensive and complicated machines, the use of which is very demanding. In this book Priv. -Doz. Dr. med. Dipl. -Ing. D. Peter pretschner has described a new system which contains his ideas and his technical developments. He describes a solution to the urgent questions and dif ficulties in the employment of radioactive substances for diagnosis. It does not demand large resources and can be used under the appropri ate individual physiological conditions. Here he was helped by his training as a natural scientist and engineer, as well as by his being an experienced clinician.

In diagnostic medicine a large part of information about the patient is drawn from data, which, more or less, are represented in an opti calor pictorial form. There is a very wide range of such data as e.g. the patients appearance, the various kinds of radiological images, or cytological imagery. In conventional diagnostics the data, as it comes from the acquisition device, is perceived by the physician and is interpreted with the help of a large amount of "a priori" knowledge to give a diagnostic finding. During the last 15 years a steadily rising number of attempts have been made to support these processes by the application of com puters. The attempts mainly concentrate on three objectives: 1. Support of the perception process by the production of better or new types of images, e.g. by Computer tomography or Computer angio graphy (image processing) . 2. Automation of the interpretation process, e.g. for bloodcell dif ferentiation (pattern recognition) . 3. Management of the steeply rising amount of medical image data in the hospital (image data bases) . Although the early applications of digital methods aimed at the second . . objective, in the last years much more success has been a achieved in the support of the perception process by methods of image process ing. The reason for this is obvious - in the case of automatic interpre tation the a priori knowledge of the physician has to be formalized.

This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Pictorial Information Systems in Medicine" held August 27-September 7, 1984 in Hotel Maritim, Braunlage/Harz, Federal Republic of Germany. The program committee of the institute consisted of KH Hohne (Director), G. T Herman, G. S. Lodwick, and D. Meyer-Ebrecht. The organization was in the hands of Klaus Assmann and Fritz Bocker In the last decade medical imaging has undergone a rapid development New imaging modalities such as Computer Tomography (CT), Digital Angiography (DSA) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were developed using the capabilities of modern computers. In a modern hospital these technologies produce already more then 25% of image data in digital form. This format lends itself to the design of computer assisted Information systems Integrating data acquisition, presentation, communi cation and archiving for all modalities and users within a department or even a hospital. Advantages such as rapid access to any archived Image, synoptic presentation, computer assisted image analysis to name only a few, are expected. The design of such pictorial information systems, however, often called PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems) In the medical community is a non-trivial task involving know-how from many disciplines such as - Medicine (especially Radiology), - Data Base Technology, - Computer Graphics, - Man Machine Interaction, - Hardware Technology and others. Most of these disCiplines are represented by disjunct scientific communities.

The contents of this book are drawn from invited papers, as well as selected papers from two workshops: the 1985 IEEE Workshop on Lan guages for Automation-Cognitive Aspects in Information Processing, which was held in Mallorca, Spain, June 28-30, 1985; and the 1984 IEEE Workshop on Visual Languages, which was held in Hiroshima, Japan, December 7-9, 1984. Panos Ligomenides and I organized the technical program of LFA '85, and Tadao Ichikawa and I organized the techni cal program of VL '84. Both workshops have now become successful annual events in their own right. The intersecting area of visual languages and visual programming especially has become a fascinating new research area. It is hoped that this book will focus the reader's attention on some of the interesting research issues as well as the potential for future applications. After reading this book, the reader will undoubtedly get an impression that visual languages and the concept of generalized icons can be studied fruitfully from many different perspectives, including computer graphics, formal language theory, educational methodology, cognitive psychology and visual design.
