Este es un libro de Historia Económica mundial que aborda épocas y territorios poco tratados por los manuales de esta disciplina. Se centra en el período anterior a 1800 (y, normalmente, posterior a 1500) y en aquella parte del planeta en la que la civilización occidental tenía una menor presencia o no la tenía en absoluto. Este es el sentido del título Escapando de eurocentrismo, que bien podría leerse como Escapando del euro-centrismo. Deliberadamente se huye de interpretaciones basadas en ideologías, conceptos y experiencias europeas, para buscar otras que inciden en las condiciones internas de las civilizaciones no-occidentales. Hay dos ideas básicas. En primer lugar, que el carácter depredador de los regímenes autocráticos de muchas de esas civilizaciones fue muy nocivo para su progreso. La segunda idea, némesis de la anterior, es que la clave del desarrollo económico de algunas de esas civilizaciones, singularmente la China medieval y el Japón moderno, se hallaba en la construcción de mercados libres.

Este volumen es producto de una confluencia de experiencias historiográficas heterogéneas, forjadas en la práctica de la historia política, la historia religiosa y la historia conceptual desde diversos puntos de la geografía latinoamericana y reunidas en el grupo de trabajo, Religión y política, de la red Iberconceptos de historia conceptual comparada. Ofrece un acercamiento a la forma en que la producción histórica de campos diferenciados para lo político y lo religioso tuvo lugar en el lenguaje y, a través de éste, en las prácticas, instituciones y relaciones políticas. Está constituido por textos centrados en trayectorias semánticas específicas, estrechamente ligadas entre sí: civilización desde la perspectiva de su relación con el cristianismo, el concepto de Iglesia, las voces caridad y misión, y otras que forman parte de la constelación semántica de la libertad: soberanía, libertad religiosa, fanatismo, tolerancia y el adjetivo laico, además de un epílogo a propósito del concepto de moral. Asimismo comprende una reflexión teórica y metodológica en torno al interés de este tipo de enfoque para otras interpretaciones históricas. Los diversos capítulos dan cuenta de ámbitos concretos de conflictividad y de tensiones sociales y políticas decisivas de la historia latinoamericana. Además, permiten observar cómo el lenguaje atestiguó y promovió la producción de una diferenciación que fue a la vez política, social, conceptual. El conjunto evidencia rasgos semánticos y ritmos de cambio comunes a la región, a la vez que permite apreciar los límites de la experiencia común, marcados por una pluralidad de historias, de actores y de circunstancias. Convergen así en estas páginas la historia conceptual y la historia de la secularización en una nueva historia de las diferenciaciones y solapamientos históricos producidos en un largo siglo XIX.

En la renovación de la historiografía modernista han alcanzado una importancia central los estudios sobre la ciudad, la representación política, la fiscalidad y el gobierno de la monarquía. Los avances experimentados en estas líneas de investigación en los últimos cuarenta años han permitido mejorar nuestro conocimiento de las dinámicas sociales y políticas que experimentaron los estados europeos, así como los cambios en las formas de acción de los gobiernos a la hora de afrontar nuevos y cada vez más complejos desafíos de todo tipo. Los trabajos que se recogen en este volumen profundizan en esas líneas de investigación al tiempo que revisan algunos de los planteamientos anteriores y proponen nuevas hipótesis sobre el sistema fiscal de la monarquía y las economías urbanas, a la vez que prestan atención a las tensiones que se generaron en los ámbitos urbanos, su expresión política en Cortes y Parlamentos, las transformaciones en las expresiones festivas, los símbolos y otras formas de representación de la ciudad. Abstract Studies about the city, political representation, taxation and the government of the monarchy have reached a central importance in the renewal of modernist historiography. The advances experienced in these lines of research in the last forty years have allowed us to improve our knowledge of the social and political dynamics experienced by European states, as well as the changes in the forms of action of governments when facing new and each increasingly complex challenges of all kinds. The works that are collected in this volume delve into these lines while reviewing some of the previous approaches and proposing new hypotheses about the fiscal system of the monarchy and urban economies, also paying attention to the tensions that are generated in urban areas, their political expression in courts and parliaments, the transformations in festive expressions, symbols and other forms of representation of the city.

Was Western civilization founded by ancient Egyptians and Phoenicians? Can the ancient Egyptians usefully be called black? Did the ancient Greeks borrow religion, science, and philosophy from the Egyptians and Phoenicians? Have scholars ignored the Afroasiatic roots of Western civilization as a result of racism and anti-Semitism? In this collection of twenty essays, leading scholars in a broad range of disciplines confront the claims made by Martin Bernal in Black Athena: The Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization. In that work, Bernal proposed a radical reinterpretation of the roots of classical civilization, contending that ancient Greek culture derived from Egypt and Phoenicia and that European scholars have been biased against the notion of Egyptian and Phoenician influence on Western civilization. This book is an extended argument on the "coloniality" of power by one of the most innovative scholars of Latin American studies. In a shrinking world where sharp dichotomies, such as East/West and developing/developed, blur and shift, Walter Mignolo points to the inadequacy of current practice in the social sciences and area studies. He introduces the crucial notion of "colonial difference" into study of the modern colonial world. He also traces the emergence of new forms of knowledge, which he calls "border thinking." Further, he expands the horizons of those debates already under way in postcolonial studies of Asia and Africa by dwelling in the genealogy of thoughts of South/Central America, the Caribbean, and Latino/as in the United States. His concept of "border gnosis," or what is known from the perspective of an empire's borderlands, counters the tendency of occidentalist perspectives to dominate, and thus limit, understanding. The book is divided into three parts: the first chapter deals with epistemology and postcoloniality; the next three chapters deal with the geopolitics of knowledge; the last three deal with the languages and cultures of scholarship. Here the author reintroduces the analysis of civilization from the perspective of globalization and argues that, rather than one "civilizing" process dominated by the West, the continually emerging subaltern voices break down the dichotomies characteristic of any cultural imperialism. By underscoring the fractures between globalization and mundializacion, Mignolo shows the locations of emerging border epistemologies, and of post-occidental reason. In a new preface that discusses Local Histories/Global Designs as a dialogue with Hegel's Philosophy of History, Mignolo connects his argument with the unfolding of history in the first decade of the twenty-first century.
