The Spanish Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 sheds new light on what the World Health Organization described as "the single most devastating infectious disease outbreak ever recorded" by situating the Iberian Peninsula as the key point of connection, both epidemiologically and discursively, between Europe and the Americas. The essays in this volume elucidate specific aspects of the pandemic that have received minimal attention until now, including social control, gender, class, religion, national identity, and military medicine's reactions to the pandemic and its relationship with civilian medicine, all in the context of World War I. As the authors point out, however, the experiences of 1918-19 remain persistently relevant to contemporary life, particularly in view of events such as the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic. El tema principal de este libro es un relato histórico acerca de la Reforma Universitaria de 1918 y sus consecuencias. A partir de la narración de estos hechos –a los que se califica de trascendentes no solo por su impacto en las aulas universitarias sino también por sus implicancias sociales y su proyección americanista– se intenta demostrar que la autonomía universitaria tal cual hoy es concebida por los distintos sectores reformistas no surgió como una consecuencia de este movimiento y ni siquiera formó parte en esos términos de la agenda de debate de sus protagonistas. El periodo histórico en el que se centra este análisis comprende los años 1917 a 1922, es decir desde las embrionarias manifestaciones del conflicto en la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba hasta la incorporación de los postulados reformistas en los estatutos de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral, última casa de estudios en acogerlos durante el primer impulso de la reforma. El objetivo que se traza finalmente es dilucidar si en verdad aquellos estudiantes cordobeses plantearon la cuestión autonómica y, en caso de ser así, cuáles fueron sus alcances, o si, en realidad, un posterior desarrollo intelectual y político atribuyó a aquellos sucesos connotaciones y metas que los reformistas jamás imaginaron.

This book presents a new approach to understanding the history and practice of cognitive-behavior therapy by presenting country profiles in 38 countries located around the world. The objectives of this edited volume are to provide a broad understanding of the practice of CBT internationally as well as country specific practices that will provide researchers and practitioners with important information for consideration in the application of CBT. The book begins with an introductory chapter by the editors that discusses the history of CBT and the efforts to globalize and disseminate the science and practice of CBT as well as the unique cultural and international variables. The subsequent chapters offer detailed country profiles of the history and practice of CBT from around the globe. More specifically, chapters will provide an overview of the country, a history of psychotherapy in the country, current regulations regarding psychotherapy provision, professional and cognitive behavior therapy organizations, training opportunities/programs in CBT, populations most frequently worked with using CBT in the country, the use and adaptation of CBT, the research on CBT in the country, and CBT with special populations (children, immigrants, HIV+, etc). Many of the nations represented are the most populous and influential ones in their respective regions where CBT has been incorporated into psychotherapy training and practice. Taken as a whole, the countries are quite diverse in terms of sociocultural, economic, and political conditions and the impact of these variables on the practice of CBT in the country will be discussed. The final chapter of the volume offers a summary of the patterns of practice, integrating the main findings and challenges and discussing them within a global context. A discussion of the vision for next steps in the globalization of CBT concludes the book.
