Brazil was the American society that received the largest contingent of African slaves in the Americas and the longest lasting slave regime in the Western Hemisphere. This is the first complete modern survey of the institution of slavery in Brazil and how it affected the lives of enslaved Africans. It is based on major new research on the institution of slavery and the role of Africans and their descendants in Brazil. Although Brazilians have incorporated many of the North American debates about slavery, they have also developed a new set of questions about slave holding: the nature of marriage, family, religion, and culture among the slaves and free colored; the process of manumission; and the rise of the free colored class during slavery. It is the aim of this book to introduce the reader to this latest research, both to elucidate the Brazilian experience and to provide a basis for comparisons with all other American slave systems.

O livro narra as experiências e acepções de vida e de morte recriadas na outra margem do Atlântico, a partir da apropriação do bem morrer e do bem viver orientados pela liturgia católica, em interação com as heranças africanas de ancestralidade.

In Insignificant Things Matthew Francis Rarey traces the history of the African-associated amulets that enslaved and other marginalized people carried as tools of survival in the Black Atlantic world from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. Often considered visually benign by white Europeans, these amulet pouches, commonly known as “mandingas,” were used across Africa, Brazil, and Portugal and contained myriad objects, from herbs and Islamic prayers to shells and coins. Drawing on Arabic-language narratives from the West African Sahel, the archives of the Portuguese Inquisition, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century European travel and merchant accounts of the West African Coast, and early nineteenth-century Brazilian police records, Rarey shows how mandingas functioned as portable archives of their makers’ experiences of enslavement, displacement, and diaspora. He presents them as examples of the visual culture of enslavement and critical to conceptualizing Black Atlantic art history. Ultimately, Rarey looks to the archives of transatlantic slavery, which were meant to erase Black life, for objects like the mandingas that were created to protect it.

No âmbito da coroa, a palavra governo incorporou esse imaginário doméstico, pois era amplamente aceito que a arte de conduzir uma família ou a “República” demandava as mesmas exigências, qualidades e princípios ético e político. Com histórias sobre aquelas sociedades e seus personagens – quer governadores, bispos, senhores poderosos ou senhores forros que governavam escravos –, esta obra aborda e relaciona sociedades assentadas na maior das desigualdades: a escravidão, aceita e naturalizada em terras do Brasil e de Angola, onde ela resistiu e findou tardiamente.
