O Volume VIII dos Escritos Compilados de H. P. Blavatsky tem uma importância especial uma vez que foi nesse período que Helena Blavatsky se estabeleceu em Londres, depois de partir definitivamente da Índia. É nesse período que surgem seus editoriais, ensaios e artigos mais brilhantes. Em setembro de 1887, ela funda a revista Lúcifer, descrita como “uma Revista Teosófica, projetada para trazer à luz coisas escondidas da escuridão". A revista foi publicada por George Redway, porém, logo foi organizada, com a ajuda inestimável da Condessa Wachtmeister, que a dirigiu por vários anos, a Theosophical Publishing Company, a qual assumiu a publicação de Lúcifer e tudo o mais produzido pelo grupo de trabalhadores de Londres. Em novembro de 1887, aparece o famoso artigo O Caráter Esotérico dos Evangelhos, publicado em três fascículos. Do primeiro exemplar até outubro de 1888, a responsabilidade editorial de Lúcifer foi compartilhada por H.P.B. com Mabel Collins. Há uma biografia dos personagens mais importantes no Índice Bio-bibliográfico ao final do Volume. Em dezembro Lúcifer publica a famosa Carta Aberta intitulada: “‘Lúcifer´ para o Arcebispo de Candelária, Saudações!” e neste mesmo mês inicia-se a famosa controvérsia com o abade Roca. Exemplares de Lúcifer de setembro, outubro e novembro de 1887, bem como de janeiro de 1888, publicam os famosos “Comentários sobre Luz no Caminho” assinado por um triângulo. Trata-se, pois de um período muito fértil. Em 1888, HPB publica A Doutrina Secreta, funda a Escola Esotérica e escreve as Instruções. Em 1889, publica A Chave para a Teosofia e A Voz do Silêncio.

O texto "O Caráter Esotérico dos Evangelhos", de Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, foi escrito em três fascículos, publicados originalmente na revista Lúcifer, fundada pela autora, em Londres. A primeira parte da série foi publicada no exemplar de novembro de 1887; a segunda, em dezembro de 1887 e a terceira em fevereiro de 1888. Fazem parte do Volume VIII dos Collected Writings (Escritos Coletados) de H.P. Blavatsky, compilados por seu sobrinho, Boris de Zirkoff. A série não foi concluída. Paralelamente, H.P.B. escrevia vários outros artigos e A Doutrina Secreta, sua magna obra, cujo primeiro volume foi publicado em outubro de 1888. H.P. Blavatsky vivia então em Londres, para onde se mudou em maio de 1887, portanto, seis meses antes de começar a escrever este texto. Neste mesmo ano, no dia 19 de maio de 1887, foi fundada a Loja Blavatsky. H.P. Blavatsky escreveu cerca de 10.000 páginas de livros, além de, aproximadamente, mil artigos em inglês, francês, russo e italiano, contidos nos 14 volumes dos Collected Writings de H.P. Blavatsky. Nestes livros e artigos Blavatsky fez aproximadamente 440 comentários ao Novo Testamento. O tema "cristianismo esotérico" foi abordado por H.P.B. em vários importantes ensaios, artigos e notas de pé de página de escritos de outros autores. Em "O Caráter Esotérico dos Evangelhos", H.P. Blavatsky discorre sobre o significado oculto ou esotérico de passagens do Novo Testamento. Segundo a autora, a ideia de escrever o texto surgiu de uma carta recebida por ela, publicada sob o título: São os Ensinamentos Atribuídos a Jesus Contraditórios? H.P.B. concorda com as críticas apontadas na carta afirmando que em vista das revisões da Bíblia e de seus muitos milhares de erros, enganos de tradução e interpolações (algumas admitidas, outras não), não é possível censurar alguém por recusar-se a acreditar nestes textos. Porém, ela objeta a que se considerem os Evangelhos simplesmente "depósitos de falsidades", pois todos os textos religiosos serão "depósitos de falsidades" se aceitos a partir de interpretações exotéricas literais. Para compreender adequadamente os Evangelhos seria necessário conhecer as chaves de sua interpretação. Estas chaves de interpretação são tratadas em O Caráter Esotérico dos Evangelhos.Marly Winckler
