Historiographically this book rests on the fact that European transitions to modern economic growth were obstructed and promoted by the Revolution in France and 15 years of geopolitical conflict sustained by Napoleon in order to establish French Hegemony over the states and economies of Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal and overseas commerce. The chapters reveal that their authors concerns to analyse both the nature and significance of connections between geopolitical and economic forces lend coherence to a collaborative endeavour utilising comparative methods to address a mega question. What might be plausibly concluded about the economic costs and the benefits of this protracted conjuncture of Revolutionary and Napoleonic Warfare? Heraldry was an omnipresent feature of medieval and early modern state rooms and thus a crucial element to the visual programme in palaces, castles, residences and town halls. In spite of its massive presence, its function and significance have hardly been investigated and its specific contribution to these spaces has often been neglected. This collection of papers shows to what extent coats of arms contributed to or even shaped the communication of these rooms and demonstrates how heraldic programmes provide a better understanding of the strategies of self-representation and communication of their commissioners and users. Sem lei de responsabilidade não há constituição desvela o esforço desprendido por deputados gerais e senadores, no decorrer da primeira legislatura (1826-1829), para articulação de mecanismos de controle dos atos praticados pelos ministros de Estado por meio quer da regulamentação do texto constitucional, quer da prática político-parlamentar. Verifica-se o quanto a estratégia utilizada, sobretudo pelos deputados da oposição desde as primeiras sessões diárias legislativas de 1826, foi bem-sucedida e logrou o estabelecimento de regras até hoje presentes em ambas as câmaras do Congresso Nacional. Não há que se falar, portanto, que a lei de responsabilidade "em desuso caiu" pois, a possibilidade de ser aplicada inibia em grande parte a prática de atos que pudessem infringir os textos legais. Além disso, após ser publicada no dia 15 de outubro de 1827, passadas as eleições para a segunda legislatura, a lei de responsabilidade foi aplicada a um caso concreto e, a partir de sua aplicação, mesmo com a não aprovação do decreto de acusação em face do ministro da Guerra, foram obtidos efeitos políticos concretos, tanto imediatos quanto no decorrer das demais legislaturas. Ou seja, conforme ressaltado, décadas depois, pelo marquês de São Vicente em relação a essas conquistas obtidas nas primeiras sessões anuais legislativas, em especial com a regulamentação da responsabilidade na primeira legislatura: "Esta lei é uma das conquistas gloriosas do poder Legislativo brasileiro nos tempos em que ele exercia todas as suas atribuições e era circundado de grande força moral". Trata-se de leitura fundamental para a compreensão da história da construção do Estado e do direito no Brasil, por meio de debates travados em ambas as câmaras do poder legislativo em seus primeiros anos de funcionamento.
