En Argentina entre 1910 y 1940 grandes cambios dieron lugar a la creación de establecimientos destinados a educar, exhibir y producir artes vinculadas a la industria. Buenos Aires fue una ciudad privilegiada en este proceso, en donde surgieron numerosas escuelas técnicas para obreras y obreros, se crearon salones nacionales de artes decorativas, se organizaron exposiciones comunales dedicadas a las artes aplicadas e industriales y se fundó el Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo. Entre otros planes exitosos y también fallidos, estas instituciones formaron parte de los proyectos que diversas figuras del ámbito artístico e industrial buscaron impulsar. La historia del arte ha relegado a las artes decorativas por considerarlas una producción de menor relevancia. Sin embargo, a principios del siglo XX en Argentina surgió una preocupación sobre el lugar desde el cual las artes podrían acompañar un proyecto de país industrial y moderno: las artes aplicadas, entre la belleza y la utilidad, se mostraban como un producto ideal para esta tarea. Este libro muestra cómo fomentar el vínculo entre arte e industria iba de la mano de un deseo de progreso, a la vez que atiende a figuras poco exploradas como el lugar de los estudiantes, artesanos y obreros en la producción artística.
