Joan Romero (Albacete, 1953) és catedràtic de Geografia Humana de la Universitat de València i director de l'Institut Interuniversitari de Desenvolupament Local. Des de 2002 és responsable del projecte d'investigació «Estratègies de Cooperació i Desenvolupament Territorial a Espanya». Participa també en projectes d'investigació de l'European Spatial Planning Observation Network. D'altra banda, ha estat secretari general tècnic del Ministeri d'Educació, conseller d'Educació i Ciència de la Generalitat Valenciana, diputat i portaveu d'Educació al Congrés dels Diputats i, entre 1997 i 1999, secretari general del PSPV-PSOE.

Unravelling the debate about the Spanish nation and its identity in the new democracy, this book looks at the issue as both a historical debate and a contemporary political problem, particularly complex due to the legacy of the Francoist Dictatorship which deeply eroded the legitimacy of Spanish nationalism. During and since the transition Spanish nationalist discourse has evolved to meet the challenge of new concepts of nation and identity. These formulations argue very different configurations of the relationship between nation and state. While the Constitution of 1978 defines Spain as a nation of nationalities, many politicians and intellectuals now claim that Spain is a nation of nations, others that it is a nation of nations and regions, or a post-traditional nation state, or post-national state. For the peripheral nationalists, it is merely a state of nations and regions. What is at issue is not whether Spain exists or not as a nation; rather, it is the traditional ways of seeing Spain from both the centre and the periphery that are being challenged. The Reinvention of Spain examines the ways in which Spanish and regional identities are projected and how influence the external actions of the Spanish state. It also analyses the dynamic of comparative grievance and competition between regions deriving from the peculiar architecture of the state in Spain, and their effect on social and political cohesion. Finally, it examines scenarios of change that might foster solutions but asserts that Spain will continue to reinvent itself.

El concepto de España como nación unida o como cúmulo de nacionalidades heterogéneas e independientes es un concepto polémico actualmente pero un repaso por la historia aclara cualquier tipo de duda. ¿Es España una nación con una tradición y una historia común o es una unión impostada de nacionalidades que apenas tienen en común compartir espacio en la Península Ibérica? Esta es la pregunta que se hace Luis E. Íñigo y que intenta contestar en esta obra, para ello utilizará la mejor argumentación posible: la propia historia de España desde los íberos hasta la actualidad. Este repaso nos llevará a entender los argumentos a favor de la heterogeneidad lingüística y territorial de nuestro país pero también a descubrir cómo el nacionalismo actual utiliza una mitología no demasiado rigurosa para avanza cada vez más en la desarticulación espiritual, económica y política de España para satisfacer intereses, en ocasiones, privados. Sin duda España es un país complejo, estuvo en sus inicios poblado por tribus que, aún siendo independientes, ya daban muestras de una cierta tendencia homogeneizante, pero la constitución de la nación como tal, se la debemos a los romanos. Tras la invasión musulmana, el modo en que se hizo la Reconquista vino a iniciar algunas tendencias que llegan hasta la actualidad como el patriotismo local o la tensión entre centro y periferia, ni los Reyes Católicos ni los Habsburgo, más preocupados en crear un imperio y unirlo bajo la fe, supieron dar a España una unidad efectiva y no será hasta el conde-duque de Olivares que no se dé un intento serio de unificar el país. Pero el verdadero batacazo para la creación de un estado se dio en el S.
