En la década de 1930 se asiste a un oscurecimiento progresivo de la democracia liberal europea, hostigada por los totalitarismos y tímidamente defendida incluso por los países que habían basado en ella su sistema político. Uno de sus momentos más sombríos en aquel periodo es la Guerra Civil española, la cual, más que constituir, como pretende la interpretación más consolidada, un gran enfrentamiento entre democracia y fascismo, fue una lucha sangrienta, inducida por numerosos móviles, en la que la democracia desapareció casi por completo desde el principio. Este libro analiza las razones del hundimiento de la democracia en España y del estallido de la guerra civil como producto de la mezcla explosiva constituida por antagonismos que marcan la historia del país y por el contexto europeo dentro del cual aquélla se desarrolla. La República española, nacida en 1931 con el fin de instituir un auténtico sistema liberal-democrático, está destinada al fracaso no sólo a causa de las fuerzas contrarias a la democratización y a las reformas sociales, sino también por la escasa madurez democrática de quienes querían alcanzar esos objetivos. El ejemplo de los totalitarismos europeos genera entonces en el país aquel clima de “gran temor” que contribuirá, quizá más que cualquier otro factor, a precipitarlo a la lucha fratricida. Una vez comenzada la guerra, serán precisamente los totalitarismos europeos los que se apoderen de ella y la perpetúen más allá de los límites de la capacidad de ataque y resistencia de los contendientes españoles, mientras las potencias democráticas se amparan en la política de no-intervención. La República, agredida por los militares insurrectos apoyados por las potencias fascistas, se ve encerrada entonces en un círculo vicioso: es mantenida con vida por las ayudas de la URSS, que, favoreciendo un creciente dominio comunista, la comprometen aún más ante los ojos de las democracias occidentales, reforzando su determinación de no exponerse a su favor y haciéndola cada vez más dependiente de los soviéticos. El lector tiene en sus manos una gran síntesis histórica e historiográfica de la Guerra Civil española fruto de muchos años de investigación por parte del historiador italiano Gabriele Ranzato.
