En España invertebrada, José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) se propuso analizar la crisis política y social de la España de su época. Aplicando el método de la razón histórica, realizó un estudio del proceso general de integración y descomposición de las naciones, así como la explicación de fenómenos característicos de la historia de España. Según Ortega, la desarticulación de España como nación radica en la crisis histórica de su proyecto de vida en común: "era la propia España el problema primero de cualquier política". La acción directa de determinados grupos sociales, los pronunciamientos, los regionalismos y los separatismos (empezando por la propia Castilla), son reflejo de un "proceso de desintegración que avanza en riguroso orden dice el filósofo, desde la periferia al centro, de forma que el desprendimiento de las últimas posesiones ultramarinas parece ser la señal para el comienzo de una dispersión interpeninsular".
