This book profiles four generations of women from one Afro-Cuban religious family. From a plantation in Havana Province in the 1890s to a religious center in Spanish Harlem in the 1960s, these women were connected by their prominent roles as leaders in the religions they practiced and the dramatic ritual artwork they created. Each woman was a medium in Espiritismo—communicating with dead ancestors for guidance or insight—and also a santera, or priest of Santería, who could intervene with the oricha pantheon. Kristine Juncker argues that, by creating art for more than one religion, these women shatter the popular assumption that Afro-Caribbean religions are exclusive organizations. Most remarkably, the portraiture, sculptures, and photographs in Afro-Cuban Religious Arts offer rare glimpses into the rituals and iconography of these religions. Santería altars are closely guarded, limited to initiates, and typically destroyed upon the death of the santera, while Espiritismo artifacts are rarely considered valuable enough to pass on. The unique and protean cultural legacy detailed here reveals insights into how ritual art became popular imagery, sparked a wider dialogue about culture inheritance, attracted new practitioners, and enabled the movement to explode internationally.

O presente trabalho, feito com base em pesquisa etnográfica e análise de literatura, analisa o modo como cultura escrita, oralidade e narrativas relacionam-se no espiritismo kardecista no Brasil, tendo em vista a especificidade de uma religião que, ao se pretender cristã, racionalista e erudita, legitima a autoridade de seu referencial doutrinário, cosmológico e ritual por meio de práticas culturais letradas, que necessariamente envolvem a escrita e a leitura em sua realização. Ao estabelecer um sistema de referências erudito, cuja base divide-se entre, de um lado, orientações reveladas através do transe mediúnico e a discussão grupal dessas orientações, o espiritismo atualiza não apenas um sistema religioso de crenças, práticas e valores, mas toda uma cultura bibliográfica por meio de um conjunto de performances de estudo e leitura, citação e comentário, oratória, doutrinação e prece, cujo domínio constitui a condição de participação efetiva na religião, aliás práticas vinculadas a uma socialização prévia no mundo escolar e erudito da sociedade. Investigou-se também aspectos estruturais e temáticos da literatura espírita, composta principalmente de dissertações e de narrativas, por constatar a sua centralidade na conversão, socialização e reprodução de identidades no interior deste sistema religioso contemporâneo. Todas essas questões foram articuladas ao trabalho de campo por meio de uma etnografia da leitura e da fala.

Despite its powerful influence on Cuban culture, Espiritismo has often been overlooked by scholars. Developing the Dead is the first in-depth exploration of contemporary Espiritismo in Cuba. Based on extensive fieldwork among religious practitioners and their clients in Havana, this book makes the surprising claim that Spiritist practices are fundamentally a project of developing the self. When mediums cultivate relationships between the living and the dead, argues Diana Espírito Santo, they develop, learn, sense, dream, and connect to multiple spirits (muertos), expanding the borders of the self. This understanding of selfhood is radically different from Enlightenment ideas of an autonomous, bounded self and holds fascinating implications for prophecy, healing, and self-consciousness. In Afrolatinx religious practices such as Cuban Espiritismo, Puerto Rican Santería, and Brazilian Candomblé, the dead tell stories. Communicating with and through mediums’ bodies, they give advice, make requests, and propose future rituals, creating a living archive that is coproduced by the dead. In this book, Solimar Otero explores how Afrolatinx spirits guide collaborative spiritual-scholarly activist work through rituals and the creation of material culture. By examining spirit mediumship through a Caribbean cross-cultural poetics, she shows how divinities and ancestors serve as active agents in shaping the experiences of gender, sexuality, and race. Otero argues that what she calls archives of conjure are produced through residual transcriptions or reverberations of the stories of the dead whose archives are stitched, beaded, smoked, and washed into official and unofficial repositories. She investigates how sites like the ocean, rivers, and institutional archives create connected contexts for unlocking the spatial activation of residual transcriptions. Drawing on over ten years of archival research and fieldwork in Cuba, Otero centers the storytelling practices of Afrolatinx women and LGBTQ spiritual practitioners alongside Caribbean literature and performance. Archives of Conjure offers vital new perspectives on ephemerality, temporality, and material culture, unraveling undertheorized questions about how spirits shape communities of practice, ethnography, literature, and history and revealing the deeply connected nature of art, scholarship, and worship.
