Publié à New York en 1908, alors que, Gibran avait à peine vingt-cinq ans, ce recueil de quatre nouvelles préfigure déjà la vision du monde, la thématique et le style du futur auteur du Prophète. Gibran dénonce avec violence l'hypocrisie sociale, s'insurge contre le sort réservé aux femmes dans la société traditionnelle, s'interroge sur les fondements éthiques de la loi, dépeint cruellement les coutumes ancestrales de son pays natal, le Liban, avant de se livrer, au nom du véritable amour chrétien, à une violente charge contre l'Eglise. C'est surtout ce dernier aspect du livre qui a provoqué à l'époque les milieux conservateurs au point de vouloir l'interdire à la diffusion en Syrie et en Egypte. Sur le plan littéraire, il s'agit de l'une des premières manifestations du romantisme en langue arabe, où se conjuguent, dans la tonalité prophétique Propre à Gibran, son esprit de révolte et sa veine métaphysique.
