Selon Augustin Gretillat, la Théologie est la science du salut par grâce. Cette belle définition, qui en appelle directement à la raison de la venue sur terre du Fils de Dieu, de sa mort et de sa résurrection, satisfera l'instinct spirituel du chrétien, rendu toujours sensible à la perdition de l'homme naturel. Mais la Théologie est-elle vraiment une science ? Oui, répond l'auteur ici, parce que comme les autres sciences la théologie se base sur une méthode générale identique, et qu'elle aussi produit des applications pratiques. Quant aux applications, Schleiermacher, au XVIII° s., avait souligné que le but de toute théologie est de rendre service à l'Eglise ; quant à sa méthode, Gretillat montre qu'elle ne procède pas autrement que par empirisme, puis synthèse. Car le Salut est avant tout un fait, non une conception intellectuelle, mais le fait historique de la venue du Sauveur. Ensuite seulement, la Théologie essaie de construire un ensemble cohérent qui rende compte de ce fait. Pour Gretillat, Dieu a rendu le Salut connaissable par l'âme humaine, avec sa foi, sa raison, ses perceptions ; ceci légitime à son sens de considérer la Théologie comme une science à part entière. Des six que comporte l'Exposé de Théologie Systématique, ce premier volume est certainement le plus difficile à lire, à cause de l'abstraction des concepts philosophiques qu'il manie, et parce que le style de Gretillat, parfois obscur et un peu ampoulé, peut laisser perplexe. Reculer devant l'effort qu'il demande, serait toutefois se priver des grandes richesses intellectuelles et spirituelles amassées dans la monumentale construction d'Augustin Gretillat, érigée à la gloire du Dieu rédempteur.
