Mais à présent la réaction sociologique ou socialiste contre cette grande illusion égocentrique doit naturellement ramener l'attention sur le côté social des actes que l'individu s'attribue à tort. Aussi s'est-on occupé avec curiosité de la criminalité des sectes - au sujet de laquelle rien n'égale en profondeur les travaux de M. Taine sur la psychologie des jacobins - et, plus récemment de la criminalité des foules. Ce sont là deux espèces très différentes d'un même genre, le délit de groupe ; et il ne sera pas inutile ni inopportun de les étudier ensemble.
