Depuis la Libération, les regards sont fréquemment attirés par la combativité des ouvriers de Nantes et de Saint-Nazaire. En 1953, 1955, 1968, le prolétariat nantais et nazairien est à l'origine des puissants affrontements contre l'État bourgeois. Ayant épuisé les voies de la négociation avec un patronat exceptionnellement rétrograde, les ouvriers se heurtent directement, dans l'usine ou dans la rue, aux forces répressives de l'appareil d'État. Mais cette image ne doit pas voiler les longues périodes d'apathie et la faiblesse de la conscience politique, qui caractérisent aussi le prolétariat de la Basse-Loire, notamment lors des consultations électorales. Car, tel est bien le paradoxe qu'il s'agit d'expliquer : comment et pourquoi l'ouvrier oscille perpétuellement entre le républicano-socialisme de la bourgeoisie libérale, et l'action directe de la classe autonome ; comment et pourquoi il recourt, alternativement, à un bulletin de vote bien tiède, et à la grève générale révolutionnaire ; comment et pourquoi il répugne à s'organiser dans un parti politique, tandis qu'il fait bloc derrière ses dirigeants syndicaux. Il n'existe pas d'autre moyen de répondre à ces questions, que de déterminer, avec exactitude, les rapports entretenus par le prolétariat avec les autres classes ou fractions de classe, depuis l'aube de la révolution industrielle, puisque ces caractères, et tout particulièrement la propension à l'action directe, puisent leur origine loin dans le temps. Rechercher le fil conducteur des luttes de classes, et examiner les contours du mouvement ouvrier, depuis les premiers balbutiements jusqu'aux développements contemporains, présente un autre avantage : celui de briser avec la conception classique de l'histoire du mouvement ouvrier, volontiers linéaire, volontiers cohérente, volontiers réduite aux organisations qui réussissent, alors que les tâtonnements, les contradictions, les échecs, les luttes de masse, sont aussi symptomatiques de la vie interne du prolétariat et que, en conséquence, on ne saurait les passer sous silence qu'au prix d'une mystification. C'est pourquoi cette étude sur le mouvement ouvrier dans la Basse-Loire n'est, en aucun cas, une recherche d'érudition régionale, mais se veut une tentative pour restituer à tout le prolétariat français, à partir d'un exemple précis, la saveur et la coloration de sa propre histoire.
