Harte is rather critical of the book writing, "Whether Robert Greathouse proves that a novel based on California life cannot be successfully constructed, or whether it only demonstrates that Mr. Swift has not done it, we will not pretend to say." Also includes a typescript copy of the final version published in the Overland Monthly Journal (Vol. 5, October 1870, No. 4), which includes additional material not present in this draft.
