Neither of us, however, was at all sanguine as to the effect it might produce. I applied this remedy to the interior of the larynx eight or nine times, but without any apparent effect. Mr. W. then returned to Ireland, and the same treatment was continued by Dr. Wood, of Sligo. After many months' treatment, the whisper was replaced by a very gruff voice; and when Mr. W. came over to consult me in September, 1863, the edges of the vocal cords were much more even, --the right cord being almost smooth, and the voice, though rather hoarse, was distinctly phonetic. She had suffered from loss of voice and a constant inclination to clear the throat for two years, but was otherwise quite well; she attributed the aphonia to having taken cold. With the laryngoscope, the aphonia was seen to depend on the presence of numerous small warty growths, situated on the right ary-epiglottic fold and ventricular band.
