Er betrachtet in illustrativen Fallbeispielen auch das Individuum und dessen Handlungsweisen. Mit seiner Studie „Der Selbstmord“ hat Durkheim seine vorher entwickelten Methoden einer empirischen Sozialforschung umgesetzt und das Ergebnis war, meiner subjektiven Meinung nach, seiner Zeit weit voraus. Er trennt statistisches Datenmaterial konsequent, und für den Leser klar ersichtlich, von seinen Interpretationen. Das macht es ihm möglich, vom rein deskriptiven zu einer normativen Zukunftsskizze zu gelangen, die, wenn man die präsentierten Erkenntnisse kritisch hinterfragt, durchaus einen informativen Wert hat.
