In Mr. Darwins last work we possess at length a complete and thorough exposition of his matured views. He gives us the results of the patient labour of many years unremitting investigation and of the application of a powerful and acute intellect, combined with an extraordinary active imagination, to an unequalled collection of most varied, interesting, and important biological data. In his earlier writings a certain reticence veiled, though it did not hide, his ultimate conclusions as to the origin of our own species; but now all possibility of misunderstanding or of a repetition of former disclaimers on the part of any disciple is at an end, and the entire and naked truth as to the logical consequences of Darwinism is displayed with a frankness which we had a right to expect from the distinguished author. What was but obscurely hinted in the Origin of Species is here fully and fairly stated in all its bearings and without disguise. Mr. Darwin has, in fact, crowned the edifice, and the long looked for and anxiously awaited detailed statement of his views as to the human race is now unreservedly put before us. We rise from the careful perusal of this book with mingled feelings of admiration and disappointment. Excerpt from Characters and Criticisms, Vol. 2 Imitatlon is natural, or rather, we should say, was formerly pardonable, from our social and political condition. For to the end of the last century, or even the first quarter (perhaps) of the present, there were good English writers in the coun try, with no pretence to an American spirit, except in their political speculations. The grave writing of that period, and the lighter efforts as well, were conceived and modelled on English originals. The dependence of the colonies had not yet ceased: our independence was civil only. This was especially the case in New England from the fact of its early settlement by Englishmen. There the English race was kept pure, without the admission of foreign elements. This made New England the stronghold of the English feeling of the country. This kept her, for a long while, the most provincial and colonial part of the Union. This made Boston a literary town for English wares, and gave to it its peculiar character and attitude, in respect to English writers, who found their haven there, when as voyagers they arrived, all prepared for idolatry and man-worship. How different from New York, which is cosmopolitan, and truly a metropolis, the city of theof literateurs and blue-stockings. There can be no doubt of the incalculable moral value of England to us as a means of culture. Our past is hers, and let no man undervalue the sacred in uences of ancient times, when rivalries are for gotten, jealousies have disappeared, when the drama of life appears to us simple and complete, when evil has perished and good. Alone remains. The tree of American Literature will be found to have its roots in English soil. But we can only show ourselves capable of receiving those blessed lessons by having in ourselves the virtue to live an independent life. To him that hath shall be given. When we write letters, we more commonly express our sentiments and our passions. Read, for example, the elegant pages in which Sallust raises altars to poverty, proclaims the ineffable sweetness and the eminent dignity of the Stoic moralists, stigmatises with burning declamation, with virtuous anger, the corruption of Rome, the extortion in the provinces. I s it after reading this that we shall recognise this Sallust, the corrupter of the domestic hearth, the bloodstained tribune, the slave of Caesar, the impudent extortioner, whose famous museum-gardens were built with the gold and the tears of N umidia? Incredible power of abstraction! Prodigious miracle of taste and art! This man, branded with infamy, talks of virtue like Cato pen in hand he becomes virtuous. Shall we believe also in the disinterestedness of Seneca, in his philosophy, his austerity, his clemency, by reading nothing but his moral treatises, from which morals seem to flow rather than words. Read his life, and you will avert your looks. Alongside of some real public and private virtues, what shameful weaknesses! What infamy and crime! He knew how to die: he did not know how to live.' When Seneca wrote his treatise in praise of poverty, he had some millions sterling out at usurious interest and it was the pointed saying of South, that when he (seneca) recommended people to throw away their money, it was with the view of picking it up himself.
