Excerpt from Essays in Librarianship and Bibliography Recent exploit of the Newbery Library at Chicago, referred to in a note at page 86, which has turned the bewildering multitude of the accession parts of the British Museum Catalogue into a single alphabetical series by simply photographing the titles singly, and then combining the copies in a catalogue. It is quite possible that the enterprise may prove financially unremunerative, but this would not be the case if it had been executed as a portion of the work of a national institution con trolled by the State, which on its part would have been recouped, or nearly so, by the patronage of private customers. It is only necessary to add that the State should on no account seek to make a profit out of photography, and that all transactions between the Museum or any other public depart ment and the nation, where money is concerned, should be conducted on the principle of afford ing the greatest possible public advantage at the smallest possible cost. Excerpt from Essay on Bibliography, and on the Attainments of a Librarian: By Parent, the Elder Not the least curious thing connected with this essay is, that it includes a separate scheme for divid ing literary history into fourteen great epochs, each of them connected with a predominating name. Its own epoch is sufficiently marked by the last three of these: 12th Epoch: Voltaire sketching on the walls of the Bastille the rough draft of the Henri ade. 13th Epoch: Voltaire crowned at Paris. 14th Epoch: Bonaparte, the friend of the arts and of learning, consolidating the French Republic, and giving peace to Europe.' In other words, Parent introduced what librarians call a time division, hifalutin and sentimental, if you will, but not so unlike the fundamental princi ples which guided the modifiers of Bacon's scheme, wherein all human knowledge is regarded as issuing from three sources, - Memory, Imagination, and Reason. He added a human note characteristic of his day and generation, when all hearts were aflame for philosophic research, and the maxims of the Encyclopedists were watchwords which lived, des pite the hostility of conservative censors and timid printers. We may see their influence, shom of all the personal note and the enthusiasm which marked their birth, in the systems of classifications in use today. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... PUBLIC LIBRARIES AND THEIR CATALOGUES1 "at the laundress's at the Hole in the Wall, Cursitor's Alley, up three pairs of stairs, the author of my Church History--you may also speak to the gentleman who lies by him in the flock bed--my index-maker." Thus Mr. Edmund Curll, apud Dean Swift, and the direction certainly does not convey an exalted idea of the social status of the gentleman who shared the hole of the ecclesiastical historian. It is gratifying to remark the augmented consideration, in our day, of this despised fraternity. There is no omission for which an author of serious pretensions is now more frequently taken to task than that of an index; and if on the one hand it is unsatisfactory that the offence should be so frequent, it is on the other encouraging that its obnoxiousness should be so generally recognised. "Every author," sententiously observes an American sage, "every author should write his own index. Anybody can write the book." Without going quite to this length, very many are disposed to affirm of a book without an index what the Rev. Dr. Folliott, in "Crotchet Castle," affirms of a book without matter for a quotation, namely, that it is no book at all. Now, what Mr. Curll's index-maker was to Mr. Curll, librarians are to the general republic of letters. Every visitor to the Reading Room of the British Museum who is guided by the mere light of nature persists in styling the catalogue "the index " their promotion in public consideration has accordingly kept pace with that of their humbler allies, or rather exceeded it, for if not starting originally from a point quite so depressed, they have attained one much more exalted. The cause, however, is the same in both cases--the enormous increase of knowledge, the need of a...

Excerpt from The Care of Books: An Essay on the Development of Libraries and Their Fittings, From the Earliest Times to the End of the Eighteenth Century Reader in Bibliography, delivered before the University of Cambridge in 1900, I developed the subject still further, extending the scope of my enquiries so as to include the libraries of Greece and Rome. In writing my present book I have availed myself freely of the three works above mentioned. At the same time I have incorporated much fresh material; and I am glad to take this opportunity of stating, that, with the single exception of the Escorial, I have personally examined and measured every building which I have had occasion to describe; and many of the illustrations are from my own sketches. Excerpt from A Librarian's Open Shelf: Essays on Various Subjects The papers here gathered together represent the activities of a librarian in directions outside the boundaries of his professional career, although the influences of it may be detected in them here and there. Except for those influences they have little connection and the transition of thought and treat ment from one to another may occasionally seem violent. It may, however, serve to protect the reader from the assaults of monotony. A. E. B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Library Essays: Papers Related to the Work of Public Libraries The author of these papers began his service in librarianship in April, 1895. He celebrates his silver jubilee by gathering them into a single volume. Before becoming a librarian he had worked for many years as teacher, editor and journalist, and the use of the pen having become second nature, he took it up in behalf of libraries and librarians, somewhat sooner, perhaps, than experience would warrant. However, the papers reflect to a certain extent the progress of library work during the past quarter century.
