Excerpt from The Question of Hell: An Essay in New Orthodoxy That the Divine Kingdom over all souls, revealed in Christ, is one of discipline fully adequate to bring every creature to the stature of a perfect man, its tremendous se verities no less than its evident mercies designed in sure wis dom and perfect love, and the Creator's gift, in the very na ture of the creature under Divine Fatherhood, a boon of eternal life without exception or repentance, is the solemn, joyful conviction with which the discussion of this little vol ume has been undertaken. The christening fatherhood of God, with its illustration and sacramental symbol in the christened humanity of Jesus, to the imitation of which, and heirship of God with which, we are called would seem to be upon close discrimination, the very truth of Christ for immediate practical use, until we all come in the unitv of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a per feet man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. Excerpt from The Relations of the Church to Society: Theological Essays The most useful introduction to this volume will, we think, be found in a brief account of the writer's life and character, with some indications of the very high esteem in which, as a man and as a theologian, he was held by Cardinal Newman and other distinguished men. Edmund Joseph O'Reilly was born in London, on the April 30th, 1811, and he was six years old before his parents returned to Ireland. His father died while he was young, leaving him to the care of his pious mother. This lady was one of five sisters, one of whom married the third Lord Kenmare (grandfather to the present earl); another entered the Visitation Convent at Westbury, in England; another married Mr. Bagot, of Castle Bagot, in County Dublin; and the last married Mr. Dease, of Turbotstown, in Queen's County. The father of these ladies and of Mrs. O'Reilly, Mr. Edmund O'Callaghan, of Killegorey, in the County Clare, was mortally wounded in a duel, but survived five days to repent and prepare for his judgment. It is curious to find such a man as Father O'Reilly linked so closely with the bygone age of duelling. Edmund O'Reilly spent several years of his boyhood at Mount Catherine, a few miles from Limerick. His first education he received from a private tutor. After some years at Clongowes and Maynooth, he went to Rome, about 1830, for his ecclesiastical studies, and spent seven years attending the classes of the Roman College, but residing in the Irish College, of which the late Cardinal Cullen was then president. At the end of a long and distinguished course he gained the degree of Doctor of Divinity, after what is termed a "public act" de universa theologia. Excerpt from Christian Orthodoxy: Reconciled With the Conclusions of Modern Biblical Learning; A Theological Essay, With Critical and Controversial Supplements The object of this book is the most important that could be proposed to a Christian divine in the middle of the nineteenth century. It is to make the evidences of our religion independent of all those objections which have been successfully urged by its opponents; to show that the faith, which is to render us happy here and hereafter, does not rest on the floating clouds of human dogmas, opinions, as sumptions, and superstitions, but stands fixed on the granite basis of inherent truth and historical certainty. Essays Never Before Published Classic Reprint written by William Godwin and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-29 with Religion categories.

Excerpt from Essays Never Before Published One further remark appears necessary in reference to the same Biblical passages with which the Essays are so thickly strewed. The disintegrating criticism which has resolved the Bible into its several books, and parts of books, had scarcely begun, or at least its 'work was scarcely known in England, when Mr. Godwin died. The Bible was considered as a_ whole, and a verse from any part was deemed, alike by the orthodox-and un orthodox, as of precisely the same value' with a verse from any other part. It was with no conscious unfair ness that Mr. Godwin at times made use of texts which do not to our apprehension support his position, or that he assumes that doctrines held by one writer of Scripture were therefore and of necessity held by the rest. That the same arguments are repeated in more than one Essay, the same passages quoted, that a doctrine is assailed again and again, may be a literary blemish which the author would have removed, had he himself given his book to the world. But, independently of the obvious reasons for not Omitting or altering, it is quite possible that the repetition of sledge-hammer blows was really intended by the writer, and that he deliberately sacrificed to force somewhat of literary grace. Excerpt from The Oxford Essays, and Baden Powell on Miracles Before entering upon the subject proper of his Essay, Prof. Powell attempts to remove the objection which he supposes to be felt to the discussion of the Evidences of Christianity from his point of view. He says, we are sure, without any just foundation: It is the com mon language of orthodox writings and discourses to advise the believer, when objections or difficulties arise.
