The purpose of this thesis is to examine the relationship between banking activitiesand regional economic growth both theoretically and empirically. The first paper describesthe evolution of the Turkish economy and the financial system at national and provinciallevels. The economic and financial indicators are shown over the period between 1975 and2013. In particular, the research sheds light on the nature of the imbalances in regionaleconomic development across Turkey. By so doing, a background for the thesis is established,as the effect of centralisation in the banking system on regional growth is examined. Thestudy finds that, despite the trend towards decentralisation that takes place in regionaleconomic policies, the banking system adopts centralisation policies. The second paper aims to assess the impact of banking institutions on regionalgrowth by integrating a decisional variable associated with the branch banking system in aconventional endogenous growth model. The comparative analysis of the output growth ofhierarchical and decentralised structures shows that the former causes capital to flow frompoorer to richer regions, thus increasing economic disparities. The model considers the effectof the nature of information on the decision-making mechanisms within institutions. Itpredicts that, in the case of soft information, decentralised banks, also known as unit banks, benefit regional growth more than branch banks. These first-time predictions encouragepolicy makers to take the structure of the banking system into consideration when establishingfiscal and monetary policies in order to decrease regional imbalances created by centralisedbanking. In the third paper, the model's implications are tested by means of GMM estimations, using a unique data set comprising 39 years of provincial demographic, socio-economic, andfinancial variables in Turkey. The research empirically shows that banking intermediation hasa negative effect on provincial growth. The hierarchical nature of the Turkish banking systemdoes not allow financial intermediaries to fulfil their role in promoting growth. Consolidationsand concentration policies should be reconsidered, as such policies are generally in favour ofcentralisation, which is proven to be ineffective in regional convergence. The findings alsoimply that branch managers should be given more decision-making powers in order to betterutilise locally generated information when approving/disapproving the projects, which wouldultimately lead to a decrease in regional imbalances.

The first essay develops a typology that identifies the multiple pathways, functions and operations where innovation can occur in a firm's internal business cycle based upon the extant literature that includes both technological and non-technological activities. This is an important step toward developing a comprehensive strategy for a regional economy and provides a common platform for the discussion of innovation among academics and practitioners. The typology adds to the existing knowledge of how innovation works in organizations by describing the pathways, business functions and operations in a firm's internal-business-process; the business strategies used to advance innovation to the market; and the market impact that innovation has in a regional economy. The typology is enhanced by the different threads of literature - innovation, technology, organization and marketing. The integrated approach allows academics and practitioners to understand how and where innovation occurs in firms and lays the foundation for robust metrics of the behavioral relationship between variables under study. The result is a set of assessment tools that permits diagnostics of the firm, industry, market and region. The second essay examines the relationship between innovation, emerging technologies, business firms' investment structure, and specialized types of private equity used to finance emerging technologies. A conceptual framework is developed for financial investment and a set of hypotheses tested for investment between Ohio and U.S. firms. Ohio firms take a different investing approach than U.S. firms when investing in a firm's stage of business development but are not significantly different when using specialized types of financing, investing in industry/technology niches, and investing in geographic markets. The third essay explores the role of innovation in business firms. The essay examines the reasons firms invest in innovation and then test the difference in the innovation behavior of firms. Descriptive analysis is performed in differences in the way firms engage in innovation, their preferred means of pursuing product innovation, and the reasons for engaging in product innovation. Hypotheses tests on the influence of innovation on firms' financial performance follows, as do the tests on differences in firms' contribution to the regional economy. The t-tests of the difference in means in six dimensions of economic impact performance confirm that innovative small to mid-sized firms have greater impacts on their regional economies than do their non-innovative peers.

This thesis analyses the causes and consequences of access to credit by small- scale enterprises in developing countries and the design of optimal financial systems. The first essay explores the link between informality and access to external finance by Small and Microenterprises (MSEs). A probit model is estimated using data on MSEs from Ethiopia. The results show that informality plays an important role in a firm's access to credit. Specifically, informal firms are about sixteen percentage points more likely to be credit constrained than their formal counterparts. The second essay examines the consequence of credit constraints on a firm's innovation using the same data on MSEs from Ethiopia. We construct a measure of innovation exploiting a question in the survey that asks whether a firm has engaged in some form of innovation or not. Employing various estimation methods to deal with the possible endogeneity of access to credit, the results show that access to credit has a significant and positive effect on a firm's propensity to engage in innovative activi- ties. The third essay examines whether opening a stock exchange boosts per capita income growth in Sub-saharan Africa countries (SSA). Employing a semi-parametric Difference-in-Difference (DiD), i.e., a DiD on a set of matched countries, we show that opening a stock exchange does not appear to have a significant impact on eco- nomic growth in SSA as well as in other developing countries in other regions. The fourth essay studies whether the structure of the economy determines the evolution of the optimal structure of the financial system. Employing a measure of economic structure constructed based on a country's comparative advantage and using an in- novative instrumentation strategy to deal with the possible endogeneity of economic structure, the essay shows that the structure of the economy exerts a first-order causal effect on the evolution of the structure of a country's financial system.
