Excerpt from Essays on Romanism The compiler of the present volume cannot venture to offer it to the Christian public without a few words of explanation, expressive both of his sense of its many deficiencies, and of some of the causes which have occasioned them. These deficiencies might be divided into two classes: - those which have been intentional, and those which are involuntary. Probably, however, the chief among them may be reckoned to belong to both. The references to what is called "antiquity," will be found to be few. In this respect there was an equal want of leisure for research, and of disposition to make such research, even had time been more attainable. Excerpt from Essays (Third Series) On the Errors of Romanism: Having Their Origin in Human Nature This passage was written at the time when the removal of the Roman-catholic disabilities was in agitation, and before the publication of works of a Romanizing tendency by so many members of our Church; which Opened the eyes of many to a danger they were formerly blind to. The reader is requested to remember therefore that the warnings given (and, in many instances, vainly given) in the present work were not called forth by the outbreak which has of late years excited so much alarm. Excerpt from The Religion of Numa: And Other Essays on the Religion of Ancient Rome The careful student of the history of the Romans cannot doubt the psychological reality of their religion, no matter what his personal metaphysics may be. It is the author's hope that these essays may have a human interest because he has tried to emphasise this reality and to present the Romans as men of like passions to ourselves, in spite of all differences of time and race. Excerpt from Reason and Romanticism: Essays in Literary Criticism In one sense our condition (but not only our condition, but the condition of the whole western world) is hopeless enough. We have carried criticism to the last degree of scepticism, even to the point where it becomes sceptical of itself, and have yet no new synthesis. We have destroyed our religion, and have left the emotions without a control. Emotions - which are individual, dis parate, and therefore contradictory - must be disciplined in a social community. Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Paul to the Thessalonians, Galatians and Romans: Essays and Dissertations It is a strange, though familiar facts, that great differences of opinion exist respecting the Interpretation of Scripture. All Christians receive the Old and New Testament as sacred writings, but they are not agreed about the meaning which they attribute to them. The book itself remains as at the first; the commentators seem rather to reflect the changing atmosphere of the world or of the Church. Different individuals or bodies of Christians have a different point of view, to which their interpretation is narrowed or made to conform. It is assumed, as natural and necessary, that the same words will present one idea to the mind of the Protestant, another to the Roman Catholic; one meaning to the German, another to the English interpreter. The Ultramontane or Anglican divine is not supposed to be impartial in his treatment of passages which afford an apparent foundation for the doctrine of purgatory or the primacy of St. Peter on the one hand, or the three orders of clergy and the divine origin of episcopacy on the other. Excerpt from The Drift Romanticism: Shelburne Essays; Eight Series Dear mather, - When the essay on Pater, now in this volume, was first printed in the Na tion, you, who have been in general so kindly a reader Of my work, were honest enough to tell me you did not like it at all. What profit was it, you asked, to take an author whose writing is filled with the subtlest appreciation of the world's beauty, and stretch him on the rack of a harsh ethical formula? Why not follow the lure and enjoy the spell Of romance wherever it meets the eye? Pater was a lover and confessor of strange souls; should not, then, a true critic come to him in the same receptive spirit? Well, I dare say you were right. I dare say other readers of the essay were right, who, in print and in speech, objected to its severity with less friendly intention. My preface, you see, is a sort Of apology for what may seem a lack of sympathetic taste, even of understanding.
